NEW YORK — It has been nine days since David Peterson accomplished a feat for the first time in his career.
The Mets left-hander tossed four scoreless innings to close out a 10-1 victory over the Marlins on the final day of May. But since then, Peterson has not seen the mound in major league action, with two off days going past for the Mets and Carlos Mendoza electing to steer him away from a righty-heavy Padres lineup.
It is likely that Peterson will return to the mound for the Mets behind Austin Warren during the club's second game of their series against the Cardinals at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday night at Citi Field.
The Mets will need a boost from both Warren and Peterson after Freddy Peralta scuffled in the series opener Tuesday, allowing six earned runs in six innings. Mendoza believes there will not be any rust for Peterson.
"He's been touching the mound, throwing aggressive sides," Mendoza said. "Right now, we don't see that as an issue. This is a guy that we want to use because he's important for this team."
The Mets will need more offense than they received on Tuesday against Dustin May, who notched his fourth win of the season with six scoreless innings and only four hits and one walk allowed in the shutout.
Andre Pallante will be looking to keep that momentum for the Cardinals, who have won five straight. The right-hander is 6-4 with a 3.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.
