The NFL's new league year kicks off on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. The Cards will likely release WR Robbie Anderson and his non-guaranteed $12 million salary well before that date, nearly doubling their available cap space to about $26 million.

Then the work begins, starting with how to deal with presumptive starting/unreliable center Rodney Hudson. You see, Rodney Hudson has the 12th-highest 2023 cap number on the team (just $4.8 million), but he's also due a $1 million roster bonus on March 21. If the Cards cut him before that date, they'll have to eat $5.28 million in accelerated cap charges. If they designate him a June 1 cut, they'll pay him $1 million for doing nothing (but clear an additional $2 million or so on the 2023 cap, moving the $3.8 million charge to 2024).

Monti needs to convince Hudson to officially retire before 3/21 and forego that bonus.

Also, Jordan Phillips is going to count almost $6 million on the 2023 cap because Steve Keim is a drunk idiot and a failure.

Truer words. Jordan Phillips… 6 million against the cap… two years after he’s gone. Oof.

Rodney has $1mm reasons not to retire by March 21.

its interesting: his salary is only $2mm + the $1mm roster bonus.

cutting him prior to the bonus saves you no money vs the cap. Do you call his bluff, take him to camp as cheap C depth, maybe trade him to a contender who loses a C in the preseason?

Do you know how to convince a guy not to take a million? Offer him $999,000.00

Hudson already negotiated his departure by reducing his 2023 salary from $8.25M to $2.05M, signalling a post-June 1st release or retirement.

There's no bluff here. He negotiated his departure.

We needed him at the time he was traded for but Keim screwed that contract up, too much money for his age, not to mention he was already thinking about retirement. You're right, when he reduced his salary that was his final offer, he was going no lower than that.

I don't think it was too much money.

He was 32 when we traded for him with no injury history and a reputation as one of the best centers in the league.

Kelce is getting $14m at 36. Ryan Jenson $13m at 32. Linsey $12.5m at 32.

We just got unlucky. It sucks but I don't think there's any blame on this one.

Hudson was as close to a home run as it gets. But It failed. It’s more and more clear Kiem was a giant problem. Glad that crap show is over

I wonder if Hudson would still consider retiring if being traded to the Chiefs.

So Keim made a move that was as close to a home run as it gets (which is his job) but then it is his fault it failed? Bluto should have been tossed into the wood chipper years ago but I find it hard to fault him when he makes seemingly the right move and it still doesn’t work out.

Hudson never wanted to come here. He was wanting to be cut and then sign with KC. If I recall correctly Keim entered, offered the trade compensation and Hudson was here.

I am old so maybe I'm misremembering how it went down.

Yeah seemed like a good idea at the time. For all of Keim"s many failings this was not one.
