Two Summit County high school boys volleyball teams will play for state championships on Saturday, May 30 at Wittenberg University.

Hudson and St. Vincent-St. Mary each won their state semifinals Friday, in Division I and II, respectively.

They each swept their semifinal matches, winning in three sets.

Here's a look at each of their wins.

Hudson sweeps Olentangy Berlin in OHSAA Division I state semifinals

The Hudson Explorers already knocked off defending Division I state champion St. Ignatius to get to the Ohio High School Athletic Association boys volleyball state tournament. Now, they’ll need to knock off power house Moeller to win their first boys volleyball state crown.

The Explorers (21-5) swept Olentangy Berlin (21-6) in the state semifinals on May 29, 31-29, 25-16, 25-15.

Hudson trailed the Bears 20-13 late in set one and were then down 23-19, about to drop the opener. After a timeout from head coach Larry Meehan, Hudson won the next five points to force a set point. The teams traded points and were tie 29-29 before a Berlin service error and an attack error gave the Explorers the win.

James Hummel led the Explorers with 12 kills and Fisher Zappone and Owen Stearns each had 11 kills. Jackson Battaglia fed the offense to the tune of 34 of the team’s 40 assists.

Moeller (20-4), which beat Hudson in the 2023 state semifinals, has been to the state championship game in six of the last eight boys volleyball state tournament. The Explorers will meet the Crusaders at 1 p.m. on May 30 at Wittenberg University.

The fourth time could be the charm for the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish in the OHSAA boys volleyball state tournament.

St. Vincent-St. Mary has been to all four boys volleyball state tournaments sanctioned by the OHSAA, but has lost in the previous three trips, including its state runner-up finish in 2023 to St. Francis DeSales.

St. Vincent-St. Mary (18-9) swept Independence (20-6), 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 in the state semifinals on May 29 to reach the Division II state finals against Fenwick (21-6) at 4 p.m. at Wittenberg on May 30.

Nate Sparhawk paced the Fighting Irish with 14 kills and Jaden Jacobs was behind with 10 kills. Dev Brickman had 33 assists while Moo Thaw had 15 digs and Noah Dunbar had five total blocks (four assisted) at the net.
