WALLBURG – Ledford defeated Wheatmore 4-1 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Ledford.

The Panthers improved to 1-1 overall, while the Warriors – who got a goal from Jocelyn McDowell, an assist from Emmie Messner and five saves from Kinsley Davis – moved to 1-1.

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, PARKLAND

WINSTON-SALEM – High Point Central lost 9-0 against host Parkland in nonconference girls soccer Thursday. The Bison moved to 0-2.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, BETHANY COMMUNITY

KERNERSVILLE – Bishop McGuinness beat Bethany Community 3-1 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Bishop.

Olivia Miller had a goal and an assist for the Villains (1-1). Kristen Dixon Velez and Annabelle Pirkl each had a goal.

OAK GROVE, NORTHWEST GUILFORD

GREENSBORO – Oak Grove edged Northwest Guilford 1-0 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Northwest Guilford.

Victoria Lockamy scored off an assist by Avery Peterson for the Grizzlies (1-0-1). Carmen DiFoggio made 10 saves in goal.

RAGSDALE, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

PLEASANT GARDEN – Ragsdale rolled past Southeast Guilford 8-0 in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Southeast Guilford.

Micah Moody had four goals and an assist for the Tigers (1-0). Gabby Graham added three goals and an assist, while Peighton Hanson also scored a goal. Emma Hansen, Holden Brewer and Amyah Cunningham-bey each had an assist.

Mara Cothran, who made one save, and Marley Clark split time in goal.

TRINITY, SOUTH DAVIDSON

TRINITY – Trinity won 7-1 against South Davidson in nonconference girls soccer Thursday at Trinity. The Bulldogs improved to 2-0-1.

LACROSSE

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, RAGSDALE

JAMESTOWN – Southwest Guilford beat rival Ragsdale 12-3 in Metro 6A/7A Conference boys lacrosse Thursday at Ragsdale.

The Cowboys improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Tigers opened their season 0-1 both overall and in the league.

In the girls game, Southwest rolled to a 21-0 win to improve to 1-1 and 1-0. Rylee Wexler had six goals and an assist, while Izzy Ochoa had five goals. Jennifer Carrion had three goals and two assists.

Elliotte Alderman also scored three goals. Monica Garcia-Bueno, Rylee Patterson, Kaitlyn Wildman and Abby Foster, who had two assists, each scored once. Ashleigh Lyles made two saves in goal.

Ragsdale opened its season 0-1 both overall and in the conference.

BASEBALL

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, SURRY CENTRAL

DOBSON – High Point Christian beat Surry Central 6-2 in nonconference baseball Thursday at Surry Central.

Kent Woodward drove in two for the Cougars (4-0). Will Ford added two hits, while Ty Hayes had a hit and two walks.

Hayes also earned the pitching win, striking out in four shutout innings. Ford added a shutout inning, allowing just one hit.

SOFTBALL

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, NORTH RALEIGH CHRISTIAN

RALEIGH – Wesleyan Christin won 14-4 in six innings against North Raleigh Christian in nonconference softball Thursday at North Raleigh.

Carlyn McKinney doubled and drove in three for the Trojans (1-2). Allison Cheek doubled and drove in two, while Maris Morgan had two hits and an RBI. Payton Martin added two hits, while Ella Joyce had a hit and an RBI.

Morgan earned the pitching win, striking out six in six innings.

RAGSDALE, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

PLEASANT GARDEN – Ragsdale topped Southeast Guilford 14-9 in nonconference softball Thursday at Southeast Guilford.

Morgan Osborne had three hits, including a double, and four RBIs for the Tigers (4-0). Anna Sizemore added three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs, while Claire Souther had three hits and one RBI.

Ellie Cuthrell got the complete-game pitching win, striking out five.

OAK GROVE, NORTH FORSYTH (DH)

MIDWAY – Oak Grove swept North Forsyth – 15-0 in three innings both games – in Piedmont Triad 5A/6A Conference softball Thursday at Oak Grove.

In the first game, Harper Sugg had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, while Tidah Soom and Bailey Barnette each had two hits and two RBIs. Ellie Potter homered.

Hanauer Fulk earned the pitching win, striking out five in two innings.

In the second game, Kendall Heaton had three hits, including a triple, and four RBIs. Sugg doubled, tripled and drove in five, while Chloe Smith had two hits and an RBI.

Kate Bertschi got the pitching win, striking out three.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD, TRINITY

TRINITY – Southern Guilford won 17-4 in five innings against Trinity in nonconference softball Thursday at Trinity.

Chloe Lyons, who tripled twice, and Harrison, who doubled, each had two hits and two RBIs for the Storm (1-1). Madison Smith homered and drove in two, while Madison Goins had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Lyons earned the pitching win, striking out three in five innings. McKinley Butcher took the loss, striking out three in three innings.

Butcher tripled and drove in a run for the Bulldogs (1-1). Abigail Rebert added a hit, while Emily Huneycutt and Makyrah Coles each drove in a run.

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, COVENANT DAY

WALLBURG – High Point Christian opened its season with a 7-1 win over Covenant Day in nonconference softball Thursday at Wallburg Baptist Church.

Kerri Langfitt had four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs for the Cougars, who scored five runs in the fifth. Allie Winfree added three hits and an RBI, while Madison Benson and Paisley Dixon each had a hit and an RBI.

Dixon earned the complete-game win, striking out seven.

BOYS TENNIS

LEDFORD, EAST DAVIDSON

THOMASVILLE – Ledford won 8-1 against East Davidson in nonconference boys tennis Thursday at Brown Middle.

Carson Cosper (8-2), Colton McClellan (8-3), Miller Richardson (8-4), Maddox Penland (8-0), Jackson Ralls (8-6) and Judah Hill (8-3) won in singles for the Panthers (1-1).

Zino Sabri/Adrian San Jorge (8-6) and Penland/Walker Robertson (8-4) won in doubles.

Carter Curran/Noah Babson (8-5) won in doubles for the Golden Eagles (0-2).

BOYS GOLF

AT GRANDOVER

GREENSBORO – Wesleyan Christian took second in Thursday's boys golf match against Northern Guilford and Northwest Guilford at Grandover Resort.

Northern won with a 162 team total, followed by Wesleyan with a 163 and Northwest with a 167.

Northwest's Cameron Harvey was medalist with a 37, while Wesleyan's Cooper Cavanaugh tied for fourth with a 40 and teammates Lincoln Sanders, Ren Niebauer and Cooper Tomlin tied for sixth with a 41 and Trey Passmore tied for ninth with a 42.

AT FOREST OAKS CC

GREENSBORO – Southwest Guilford was third and Ragsdale was fourth in Thursday's boys golf match at Forest Oaks Country Club.

Page won with a 141 team total, followed by Grimsley (146), Southwest (173) and Ragsdale (199).

Page's Jackson Meister was medalist with a 4-under 32. Jaxon Preston, Nicholas Niebauer and Troy Geisler each shot a 43 to lead Southwest, while Liam Grant shot a 45 to lead Ragsdale.

TRACK

AT WEST DAVIDSON

TYRO – Ledford posted nearly two dozen top-three finishes – including 11 wins – to highlight Thursday's track meet against North Davidson and host West Davidson.

Sophia Leonard (girls 800, 2:48.99; girls 1600, 6:17.06), Alivia Garner (girls 100 hurdles, 19.66), Zion Douglas (girls 300 hurdles, 59.03), Kendall Grice (boys 100, 11.64) and Shaylan Murrell (boys 400, 52.53), plus the girls 4x100 (57.19), girls 4x200 (2:04.44), boys 4x100 (47.45), boys 4x200 (1:45.62) and boys 4x800 (9:32.92) relays won for the Panthers.

Also placing were: Reagan Butcher (second – girls 200, 28.07), Douglas (second – girls 100 hurdles, 20.06), Grice (second – boys 200, 24.01), Murrell (second – boys 800, 2:18.30), Ibrahim Jah (second – boys 110 hurdles, 18:45; second – boys 300 hurdles, 48.71), Landon Thoma (second – boys long jump, 18-6.00), Bianca Gonzalez (third – girls 1600, 7:18.98), Angelina Zapata (third – girls long jump, 12-4.00) and Ronaldo Ontiveros (third – boys discus, 114-7.00), plus the boys 4x400 (second, 3:57.83).

WOMEN'S GOLF HONORS

CHARLOTTE – High Point University's Anna Howerton and Eva Lye are this week's Big South Conference women's golfers of the week.

Howerton was the Golfer of the Week while Lye was the Freshman of the Week.

Howerton earned her second weekly honor after a runner-up at the Daniel Island Invitational. She shot a 6-under 68-72-70–210 for her third top-five finish this season. Howerton, a junior, opened with a tournament best 4-under-par 68 with five birdies in the first round and totaled 10 birdies for the tournament.

Lye, with her fourth weekly accolade, finished just behind Howerton with a 5-under 73-69-69–211 – both made the All-Tournament team. She helped the Panthers win the event en route to her third top-five finish this year. She made five of her 12 birdies in the second round as she made 35 pars.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

ELON – High Point University lost 15-7 against Elon in nonconference women's lacrosse Thursday at Elon.

Tatum Goettelmann had a goal and two assists for the Panthers (0-5), who trailed 10-2 at halftime. Shannon Smith added two goals, while Jaidyn Donley had a goal and an assist. Bella Germani, Rachelle Gauthier and Lauren Pujolar each had a goal.

Ava Welsh made four saves in goal, while Madilyn Wargo also had four saves.

CLAYMAN NAMED JOE B. HALL FINALIST

BOSTON – High Point University men's basketball coach Flynn Clayman has been named a finalist for the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award.

The award is presented annually to the top first-time head coach in Division I college basketball. It is named in honor of longtime Kentucky head coach Joe B. Hall, who was given the task of following the legendary Adolph Rupp.

Clayman is in his first season as head coach after serving as associate head coach under Alan Huss. The Panthers captured their third straight Big South regular-season title and No. 1 seed entering the Big South Tournament.

In league play, HPU set a program record going 15-1. Finishing out the regular-season, High Point compiled a 27-4 record for its third straight 27-win season – the most in conference history. Clayman was named the Big South Coach of the Year following the regular season.

FLETCHER RECEIVES LEADERSHIP AWARD

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – High Point University men's basketball assistant coach Ben Fletcher has received the NABC Guardians of the Game Award for Leadership.

Fletcher is in his first season at High Point after previously coaching at South Florida, Kennesaw State and Troy. Last season, Fletcher assumed the role of interim head coach at South Florida following the unexpected passing of Amir Abdur-Rahim just weeks before the Bulls' first scheduled game. Fletcher helped South Florida's players, staff and campus community while continuing to provide strong on-court leadership and skill development.

Since joining the Panthers for the 2025-26 season, Fletcher has continued to lead student-athletes during their collegiate journey. He has helped HPU compile a 27-4 overall record and a 15-1 Big South record, en route to High Point's third straight Big South regular-season title – the most by a Big South member. Fletcher has helped the Panthers' defense lead the country in steals per game (11.1) and turnover margin (7.5).

The 2026 NABC Guardians of the Game pillar awards are presented each year at the NABC Convention to coaches, administrators and contributors who embody the NABC's core values of leadership, service, education, advocacy, and inclusion.
