Thousands of ecstatic New York Knicks fans flooded the streets around Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, transforming Midtown Manhattan into a scene of chaotic celebration and rampant vandalism after the team’s historic Game 4 victory in the NBA Finals.
The wild street party quickly turned destructive when a mob of fans swarmed, climbed, and severely smashed a yellow taxi cab on 7th Avenue, shattering its windshield and denting its hood with belts.
The civil unrest erupted immediately after the Knicks completed a stunning, 29-point comeback to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106. The thrilling win gave New York a commanding 3-1 series lead, putting the franchise just one victory away from its first NBA championship title since 1973.

However, the euphoria quickly gave way to public disorder. Beyond the destroyed taxi, rioting individuals stomped on Citi Bikes and hurled them onto mailboxes. They ripped cemented poles straight out of the sidewalk and attempted to tear down municipal traffic signs.
Other factions of the crowd scaled police vans and moving semi-trucks, while illegal fireworks and flares were ignited directly in the path of Midtown traffic.
The NYPD responded heavily to the escalating mayhem, deploying mounted units and lines of officers to push back crowds and clear blocked intersections. Multiple arrests were made during the sweep.
The chaotic night marks the second major security incident of the series, following a Game 3 watch party viewing that resulted in 21 arrests and five injured police officers.
With the city on edge and a championship within reach, officials are reviewing security protocols closely. The Knicks will look to close out the series in Game 5.
