Kentucky’s Lance Heard, Kenny Minchey among ESPN’s top 100 transfers

Kentucky Football brought in multiple new additions via the transfer portal for the upcoming season, as Will Stein prepares for his first season at the helm of UK Football.

Two of those transfers were recently ranked among the top 100 in the country by ESPN.

Lance Heard, the offensive tackle who transferred from Tennessee to Kentucky, came in at #31. Here’s what ESPN’s Max Olson had to say about Heard.

What he brings to Kentucky: This is a major get for Will Stein and his staff as they build out their first portal class in Lexington. The Wildcats went to the portal last year for both of their starting tackles, Shiyazh Pete and Alex Wollschlaeger, and were willing to spend what it took to add a premium SEC starting tackle for Year 1.

Quarterback Kenny Minchey came in at #52 in the rankings. The Notre Dame transfer is expected to lead the Kentucky offense this fall.

What he brings to Kentucky: One day after he committed to Nebraska, Minchey flipped his pledge to play for new coach Will Stein at Kentucky. Stein has a track record of NFL draft picks with the Ducks: Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore up next. This move gets the Tennessee native close to home in an SEC offense that is rapidly reloading in the portal and should set him up for success as a first-time starter.

Heard brings SEC experience, which is key as Kentucky looks to rebuild the offensive line. That position group has been an issue the last couple of seasons, and you can tell the coaching staff was very intentional about targeting that group in the portal. Heard is expected to be a leader on the O-line.

As for Minchey, while he lacks in-game experience, he is a veteran player, having spent three years at Notre Dame. The tools are there, and if you combine that with Will Stein’s previous success with quarterbacks during his tenure as the offensive coordinator at Oregon, Minchey will have opportunities to succeed in Lexington.
