South Carolina women's basketball star point guard Raven Johnson is dealing with an illness, according to coach Dawn Staley.
Johnson played just 19 minutes in the 76-57 win for the No. 3 Gamecocks (26-2, 12-1) against No. 24 Alabama on Feb. 19 in Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, finishing with two points.
"Raven was sick today. We didn't know if she was going to play, but she braved through and played like the champion that she is," Staley told SEC Network following the win.
Johnson averages 10.2 points and 28.9 minutes a game.
"She's probably got a little flu, little bug that's going around," Staley said. "Raven is still her viper self, she always wants to play. Not the statistical game that she usually has but her presence alone gives us a shot of winning."
Johnson played only 10 minutes in the first half and the Gamecocks led by 10. She only played four minutes in the third quarter which ended with a 8-0 run for the Crimson Tide (20-7, 6-7) to cut the deficit to seven.
She went back in to start the fourth and played until the 5:39 mark. She got a steal into a layup to make it 68-54, then Ta'Niya Latson checked in for her.
With 5:07 left she walked to the locker room but returned to the bench not long after, remaining out for the rest of the game.
Staley said a sick Raven Johnson is still better than most point guards when they are healthy, "so I felt comfort knowing that she was just actually going to try to go so kudos to Ray."
Staley was asked by reporters if Johnson will be good for the game against No. 17 Ole Miss on Feb. 22 (noon, ESPN), and she said Johnson will be ready.
