While the Class 4A playoffs got underway on Tuesday afternoon due to expected inclement weather on Wednesday, the rest of the District 11 softball playoffs will get underway on Thursday and Friday.
Here’s what you need to know about this week’s District 11 playoff opening matchups.
Class 1A – May 22
No. 2 Marian Catholic (11-9) vs No. 3 Weatherly (9-11) – 4:30 p.m. at Pine Grove
A Schuylkill League matchup opens up the Class 1A playoffs with Marian Catholic taking on Weatherly.
The two sides have met two other times, with Marian winning both games. The Fillies defeated Weatherly 6-0 on March 26 and 16-1 on April 21.
Marian enters the postseason with a 2-3 record over its last five games, including a 3-2 loss to Lehighton on May 7.
Malina Letcher leads the Fillies with a .525 batting average, four home runs, and 36 RBI.
Hailey Treskolasky, Emily Upanavage, and DeAnna Pugh have also been major contributors to the Fillies offensively.
Weatherly enters the postseason with a 9-11 record and has won each of its last two games, including an 11-4 win over Columbia Montour Vo Tech on May 11.
No.1 Tri-Valley (15-4) vs No. 4 Nativity BVM (4-16) – 6 p.m. at Pine Grove
The second game of the doubleheader will feature another Schuylkill League matchup between Tri-Valley and Nativity BVM.
The Bulldogs despite a disappointing loss to Pine Grove in the Schuylkill League playoffs, have been one of the league’s best teams all season.
Before the loss to Pine Grove, Tri-Valley had won eight straight games entering the postseason, including wins over Schuylkill Haven, Marian Catholic, and Williams Valley.
Summer Cupsta-Klinger and Mya Schwalm have led the Bulldogs offensively, both hitting well over .450 while driving in 20+ runs and each collecting a pair of home runs.
Tri-Valley has a strong trio of pitchers in Schwalm, Amber Lettich, and Alina Leonard, allowing just 47 earned runs and 80 runs total.
It was a tough regular season for Nativity with a 4-16 record, though it did win two of its last five games. Lauren Clark leads the Green Wave with a .404 batting average and 12 RBI. Addison Ricard is hitting .371 this season as well with 11 RBI.
Class 2A – May 21
No. 1 Williams Valley (16-4) vs No. 4 Mahanoy Area (8-12) – 6:00 p.m. at Blue Mountain
Williams Valley’s Schuylkill League playoff run came to an end with a loss to North Schuylkill, but remain a legitimate contender in Class 2A.
The Vikings struggled over the last few weeks with losses in four of their last five games, but will have had 10 days off by the time they take on Mahanoy Area.
This will be their first matchup.
The Vikings are led offensively by Cierra Brill with a .417 batting average, while Olivia Hand’s with five home runs and 36 RBI are both team highs.
Quin Smeltz and Megan Perhach have also both gone deep twice for a team total of nine homers.
Hand is also the Vikings’ leading pitcher with a 3.00 ERA across 65.1 innings. Kamri Koppenhaver has also pitched quite a bit with a 2.85 ERA in 39.1 innings.
Mahanoy Area enters the District 11 playoffs with losses in three of its last four games, with a win over Tamaqua sandwiched in between.
The Golden Bears will rely on Hailey Mroczka, Naomi Kowalick, and Allison Killian offensively. The trio has been the heart and soul of the Golden Bears at the plate all season and will need to lead the upset effort.
The Mahanoy offense has been solid, with over 150 runs scored, but has struggled in the circle, allowing nearly 200 runs in 20 games.
No. 2 Schuylkill Haven (14-6) vs No. 3 Minersville (12-8) – 7:30 p.m. at Blue Mountain
After meeting twice in the regular season, Schuylkill Haven and Minersville meet again in the playoffs. The Hurricanes won both previous matchups, 12-11 and 9-5.
Fielding a younger squad, Schuylkill Haven is one of the more intriguing postseason teams this year. The Hurricanes caught fire in early April, winning 11 of their last 12 games.
After making the Schuylkill League playoffs, they were ousted by Pine Grove, 12-2.
Schuylkill Haven will look to Aisley Jenan, who hit .544 with 31 RBI, to lead the way. Allison Scherer hit .492 with one home run and 17 RBI, while Joie Schoffstall hit .471 with 20 extra base hits and 29 RBI.
Minersville didn’t qualify for the Schuylkill League playoffs but still had a strong season, winning four of its final six games, including a 2-1 win over Williams Valley.
Rilynn Brennan has been the Battlin’ Miners leader with a .492 batting average and 11 RBI. Sara McGrath has hit .441 with one home run and a team-high 25 RBI. Isabella Cruz and Grace Sterner both hit over .400, as well.
Class 3A – May 21
No. 1 Pine Grove (21-2) vs No. 4 Palisades (8-12)- 4 p.m. at Blue Mountain
The Pine Grove Cardinals won a second straight Schuylkill League crown and will now look to defend their District 11 and state championship.
The Cardinals will start their run against Palisades on Thursday at Blue Mountain.
Florida State commit Callee Leffler leads the Cardinals into the playoffs with a ridiculous .685 batting average, 14 home runs, and 43 RBI.
Meadow Umbenhauer has collected five home runs of her own with 26 RBI. Four other Pine Grove hitters have totaled 20 or more RBI this season, with two more entering the District 11 playoffs with just under 20 RBI.
The pitching duo of Jamie Dinger and Chelcy Clark is one of the best in the state. Dinger has a 0.45 ERA in 92.1 innings while Clark posted a 0.72 ERA in 38.2 innings.
As a team, Pine Grove has outscored opponents 248-25.
Palisades enters the playoffs at 8-12 and has lost six of its last seven games.
Leading the Pirates at the plate are Catie Russo, who is hitting .529 for the Pirates with three home runs, Kadence Combs, who is hitting .500, and Nadia Wilt, who is hitting .469.
Palisades’s pitching this season has struggled at times with a 4.64 ERA. They’ll rely almost solely on freshman Kendre Leidtke, who has pitched 95.2 of 99.2 innings this season.
Class 5A – May 22
No. 1 Southern Lehigh (14-6) vs No. 4 Pottsville (11-9) – 6 p.m. at Pates Park (Allentown)
Pottsville will have a tough matchup with Southern Lehigh in its District 11 opener.
The Crimson Tide enters the postseason with a 3-3 record over their last six games, with wins over Lourdes, Panther Valley, and Mahanoy Area while losing to Pine Grove, North Schuylkill, and Blue Mountain.
Peyton Eckert is the leader of the Crimson Tide both at the plate and in the circle. She’s hitting .535 this season with one home run and 19 RBI while also pitching 77 innings in the circle to the tune of a 4.00 ERA.
The Crimson Tide will also lean on Jes Siminitus and Izzy Kunstek, who have posted .377 and .356 batting averages, respectively, while driving in 17 and 15 runs each.
Southern Lehigh has won three of their last five games and has been a high-throttle offense, totaling 212 runs this season.
Isabella Germani leads Southern Lehigh offensively with a .479 batting average, five home runs, and 20 RBI. Five Spartans hitters this season are hitting over .400, while the team as a whole has hit .375 with nine home runs and 182 total runs.
Their pitching has also been fantastic with a 2.77 ERA in 106 innings, allowing just 42 earned runs and 71 runs total. The Spartans have a pair of strong pitchers in Delaney Young and Clara Detwiler, both pitching to sub-3.00 earned run averages this season.
