Tomorrow is the MLB draft.... I know it obviously doesnt receive as much exposure as the NFL and NBA drafts (even NHL for that matter), but it is definitely critical on how a team sets a foundation for the long-term future...

The Dbacks select 15th over-all in Round 1 and they must select either a LH or RH college starting pitcher who could possibly be ready to make the jump into the Majors w/in 2-years.....They've done well over the past couple of years in selecting position players.....

Here's Steve Gilbert's draft preview and I definitely agree with him:

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks know exactly who they will select with their first round pick -- No. 15 overall -- in Monday's First-Year Player Draft: the best player available. Yes, it's a cliche, but the Diamondbacks feel good enough about the state of their minor league system that they don't feel there are any urgent needs that need to be filled.

"We feel like we are deep up and down the system," scouting director Mike Rizzo said.

Last year, the Diamondbacks wanted to improve their position player depth, particularly at the corner infield and outfield positions. With that in mind, they selected college outfielders Conor Jackson (19th) and Carlos Quentin (29th) in the first round. They followed that up by picking college third baseman Jamie D'Antona with their third pick.

Quentin had Tommy John surgery after the draft, a condition the club knew about when they drafted him, but both Jackson and D'Antona were both standouts in their first years. Jackson was named the Northwest League's Most Valuable Player and D'Antona tied for the NWL lead in home runs.

While there are no urgent needs that need to be filled in the system, there is one place the club will focus a little attention on.

Past five No. 1 picks Year Player 2003 Conor Jackson, 3B 2002 Sergio Santos, SS 2001 Jayson Bulger, RHP 2000 None 1999 Corey Myers, SS

"We wouldn't mind going back to some college pitching, especially focusing on some left-handed pitching," Rizzo said. "We'd like to beef that part of the system up a little bit. You can never have too much of it."

Rizzo, who took over for Don Mitchell after the 1999 draft, has gotten the reputation as being a scouting director that favors college players over high school ones. And while that's true -- 18 of their first 21 picks last year were collegians -- Rizzo is flexible.

In the 2002 draft, he chose high school shortstop Sergio Santos in the first round.

"If there are two players and their ability is equal, then I would lean towards the college guy," Rizzo said. "If there is a high school player with far and away more ability than I'd certainly take him."

The drafting of college players during Rizzo's tenure has helped the Diamondbacks stock up a farm system that has recently drawn praise in national publications. Because of free agent signings, the Diamondbacks did not have first-round picks in the 1998 and 2000 drafts.

"In the last four drafts we've created a very deep and talented system that is just now starting to get some recognition," Rizzo said

As Rizzo looks at the draft, he sees a deep talent pool that might be a little short on high-profile, high-ceiling players.

That could bode well for the Diamondbacks, who hold their highest pick since 1999 when they drafted fourth overall. Mitchell, who preferred high school players with high ceilings, was the scouting director at that time and he selected high school shortstop Corey Myers, who has struggled in the D-Backs system.

"We think that we'll be able to get a really good, quality player at 15," Rizzo said.

I'm working at home tomorrow specifically so I can follow the draft! Will post periodic updates (as I'm sure others will also). Last I looked, Baseball America was thinking we'd go for David Purcey, a lhp with some inconsistency but supposedly very good 'pure stuff' - however, last minute $$$ demands by agents like Scott Boras have reportedly juggled the expected top of the first round substantially and not clear just how far into the round that will have impact.

We drafted brilliantly last year - I am so pumped to see who we take tomorrow.

I guess it was BPA in this regard....I believed they'd target a starting pitcher since they have a surplus of middle-IFs in their organization....

I wonder if they might eventually trade Cintron and convert Sergio Santos to 1B (which is logical since he's 6-3 and they lack 1B prospects)....

STEVEN DREW! most of the pitchers we had supposedly targetted were gone, and he was considered the top overall player in recent rankings - Boras must have gotten religion.

Interesting pick. Will he be a problem to sign?

As stated, the best college pitchers were gone already - they would have had to been in the top ten to get one.

D-Backs land Florida St. standout in draft

The Diamondbacks might have struck a bonanza in today's amateur draft by landing Florida State preseason All-American Stephen Drew with the 15th overall pick.

Drew, 21, was projected as late last week to go to San Diego with the first overall pick. But the Padres opted for local high school shortstop Matt Bush.

Drew, the younger brother of Atlanta outfielder J.D. Drew, is hitting .353 with 14 doubles, 17 home runs and 55 RBIs for the Seminoles, who will play in an NCAA Super Regional this weekend. Drew hit two home runs Sunday in a 19-3 win over Central Florida.

The 6-foot-1, 193-pound Drew has super agent Scott Boras as his family adviser, so signability might be a question. The Diamondbacks, however, have a strong relationship with Boras and have struck deals with several of his clients in past years.

The Drew family holds the distinction of having three sons taken in the first round. J.D. and Tim Drew went in the first round in 1997.

Drew can also play the outfield. He is 12 for 14 in steal attempts this season.

Scouting Report: Zeringue turned down the White Sox as a third-round pick out of E.D. White Catholic High in Thibodeaux, where he won four 3-A state titles, and he should go a round higher three years later. A prep catcher who has moved to right field, Zeringue profiles well at his current position. He's country strong, thanks to working in a sugar cane factory as a teenager, and few players in this draft can crush pitches to all fields like he can. Though he strikes out some, Zeringue has made nice adjustments since his freshman year, when he batted .245 and had difficulty with offspeed pitches. Until a late-season slump dropped his average to .396, he was well ahead of Russ Johnson's Louisiana State-record .410. Solidly built at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, he moves well and has a good arm in right field.

Third round is Mauck, Garrett, rhp, Univ Houston

Mock, sorry:

Garrett Mock, rhp

School: Houston Class: Jr.
Hometown: Houston
B-T: R-R Ht.: 6-4 Wt.: 215
Scouting Report: Mock was dazzling at the Cape Cod League all-star game last summer, setting himself up for a good chance to follow in the footsteps of Houston's two 2003 first-round righthanders, Ryan Wagner and Brad Sullivan. While he showed his 89-94 mph sinker and hard curveball at times, Mock endured a frustrating spring. He got shelled early and then injured his left ankle practicing bunt coverages, and what initially was thought to be a sprain turned out to be a slight break that sidelined him for a month. Mock has to do a better job of throwing strikes and letting his curveball and changeup play off his fastball, rather than trying to nibble at the plate and trick hitters. Mock still can be an early pick for a team that remembers how good he was on the Cape.

Fourth round:

Ross Ohlendorff: Princeton is building a reputation for churning out top-notch pitching prospects, and Ohlendorf is this year's candidate. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Texan has a slow, easy delivery with a low three-quarters arm slot. His fastball tops out at 98 mph with armside sink and bore. He went 6-3, 3.66 in the regular season, with 73 strikeouts and 28 walks in 59 innings as the Tigers' No. 1 starter, but most scouts project him as a closer because his breaking pitch is only fringe average.

A Scott Boras client combined with the DBacks supposed financial woes? This could get interesting. Remember J.D. didn't sign with the team that originally drafted him.

worst case scenario, we don't sign him. Not like we expected he'd be under the tree this morning anyhow, and this is not an exceptionally strong draft where a first round pick being lost would be devastating.

Well, no, I guess worst case scenario is Boras has his way with Joe G. and we have a Travis Lee deja vu all-over-again experience, but...maybe we've learned some things along the way.

Rumor is he (Drew) is looking for a $5 million dollar package. The Dbacks have one of the better relationships with Boras in MLB, so hopefully this will be a smooth signing.

I just looked at today's local (Nashville) free paper. On the back cover was a picture of Cesar Nicolas, and on the front of the sports section was another picture of Cesar scoring a run in yesterday's VU regional win.
