The Golden Knights are one win away from their third Stanley Cup Finals in franchise history, and the Avalanche may have lost one of their stars last night.
First, Boston Bruins news. Two guys played at the IIHF World Championships yesterday, and five are on the schedule for today. It’s the last round robin game for Team Germany, and they need a win to stay alive.
The Bruins also have a decision to make with Pavel Zacha. It’s not pressing, but they will have to make a call at some point between now and next summer.
Elsewhere around the league, the Golden Knights completed a comeback after going down 3-0 in the first 14 minutes; they now lead the series 3-0. Trade chatter has started as teams shift into the offseason. Philadelphia is looking for a center, Detroit has a goalie to offer up, and there’s a new trade board.
New details on the NHL’s ‘Hometown Remix,’ another league-wide alternate jersey program, came out yesterday. Two have already been leaked, those were confirmed, and it does sound like the Bruins will be wearing brown for the first time in over 100 years.
Catch up on Bruins and league news in the Memorial Day edition of the Daily Bean:
Boston Bruins
ZACHA: The Bruins’ front office has a decision to make, but not necessarily at this moment. Pavel Zacha is eligible for an extension on July 1. He is coming off a career-high season, and his value has never been higher, but that could also mean his extension comes at a high cost.
The Bruins are looking for speed and skill, but they may have to sacrifice some pieces to make it work.
IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Check out who is playing, how to watch, and the eight Bruins’ schedules for the World Championships. The standings and today’s schedule are down below.
Two Bruins played yesterday:
- Henri Jokiharju (FIN): 1RD; 1 assist, 1 blocked shot, +1, 3 SOG, 18:31 TOI
- Fraser Minten (CAN): 4C; 4-of-9 faceoffs won, 13:33 TOI
Round robin games end tomorrow, and the playoffs start on Thursday.
NHL News & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: The Vegas Golden Knights are one win away from the Stanley Cup Final, and what a way to do it. They went down 3-0 in the first period, but Mark Stone started the scoring for Vegas, followed by William Karlsson, Keegan Kolesar, Tomas Hertl, and Brett Howden’s empty-netter.
NHL (video via YouTube): Here is Tomas Hertl’s game-winning goal, coming with 11:39 to play in the third.
Colorado Hockey Now: Just three games in, and the Avalanche have their backs against the wall. They collapsed yesterday, blowing a three-goal lead in Game 3 of the second round. Aarif Deen has the good and bad from last night’s game.
Cale Makar returned to the lineup and played 27:14, the most on either team.
Colorado Hockey Now: And Nathan MacKinnon left, returned, and was limited in the third period of Game 3. He blocked an 86 mph shot from Shea Theodore that put him in some serious pain.
There was no update on MacKinnon’s status after the game.
PLAYOFFS
- M1 – Hurricanes (1) vs. A3 – Canadiens (1)
- C1 – Avalanche (0) vs. P1 – Golden Knights (3)
Detroit Hockey Now: Much like the Bruins, the Detroit Red Wings have a pretty good goalie waiting in the AHL. As a matter of fact, they have three. Kevin Allen takes a look at potential trade partners for Grand Rapids goaltender Sebastian Cossa, who did not play a single game in the Calder Cup playoffs.
Philly Hockey Now: Philadelphia’s looking for a top-line center. How about the kid from Hingham? The Kraken have Matty Beniers locked into a contract through 2030-31, and he was in some trade talks at the deadline. Will James has more on Beniers being an underrated trade target for the Flyers.
Hockey 24/7: As the trade talks continue, Frank Seravalli released his trade board. No Bruins made it to the top 25, but there are a few right-handed defensemen to take a look at. Topping the list is Maple Leafs LD Morgan Reilly, and in third is Vancouver’s Jake DeBrusk.
Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers are in for a big offseason. They have to make a decision on both Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov in goal, but if not, there are some options in free agency. Alan Greenberg has more on the Panthers’ summer, including some targets if ‘Bob’ does not return.
Icethetics (video via YouTube): More details about the NHL’s ‘Hometown Remix’ emerged. We know about the Panthers’ pink and Islanders’ whites, but Icethetics filled us in on more yesterday.
The Bruins’ brown sweater will be “collegiate style,” per Icethetics. The ‘Hometown Remix’ will roll out in September.
New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils are retiring their black “Jersey Jersey,” but they are going back to black for their ‘Hometown Remix.’ James Nichols has more on the new Devils sweater.
