Mar. 13—VERMILLION, S.D. — University of South Dakota sophomore middle distance standout Berkeley Engelland earned multiple all-Summit League honors at the indoor track and field conference championships Feb. 27-28 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Engelland, from Mount Vernon, was the only Coyote woman to claim multiple all-conference honors, while the men had four.
Engelland earned a pair of all-conference honors in the 800-meter race and the 4x400-meter relay. In the women's 800-meter race, Engelland reset the meet record Feb. 28 that teammate Ellie Thomas broke the day before, running 2:07.40 to take home first place. Engelland's time of 2:07.40 in the 800-meter race marked second all-time in USD indoor track and field history.
During the 4x400-meter relay, Engelland and her three teammates — Avery Winter, Thomas and Claudia Werner — earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:45.09. The women's 4x400-meter relay time marked fifth all-time in USD indoor track and field history. A total of 13 men and 14 women earned all-Summit League honors for USD, and each team earned second place overall in the Summit championships.
USD's outdoor season begins March 28 at the Wildcat Classic in Wayne, Nebraska.
MADISON, S.D. — Dakota State University's senior Ben Witt was selected as the men's Frontier Conference Indoor Track and Field Champions of Character recipient on Feb. 22, following the conference meet at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings.
Head coaches were asked to select one student athlete per team to receive this prestigious award. The award recognizes student-athletes who best exemplify the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative, which include integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
In the conference meet, Witt, a Burke native, finished with a time of 23.84 seconds in the 200-meter dash to earn 19th place, while the Trojan men's track and field team earned second place overall.
Dakota State starts its outdoor track and field season on March 21 at the Central Methodist Open in Fayette, Missouri.
ABERDEEN, S.D. — Northern State University sophomore Jeffery Boschee helped lift the men's track and field team to a sixth-place finish at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 27-28 in Mankato, Minnesota.
Boschee, from Woonsocket, finished the heptathlon with 4,794 points to earn a fifth-place finish overall across the two-day competition. Boschee recorded marks of 7.52 seconds in the 60-meter race, 6.48 meters in the long jump, 11.99 meters in the shot put, 1.98 meters in the high jump, 9.26 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, 4.13 meters in the pole vault and 2:53.99 in the 1000-meter race.
Boschee's 1.98-meter high jump finished second behind University of Sioux Falls' Johnny Cheney (2.01 meters), and his 4.13-meter pole vault earned him a third-place finish. Boschee's time of 9.26 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles marked a new personal best, as well. In total, the Wolves recorded four NSIC individual champions, six all-conference performances and two school records during the conference meet.
Northern State will begin its outdoor track season March 19-21 at the Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
