Mar. 18—SPEARFISH, S.D. — Black Hills State University's Blake Volmer was recognized as the recipient of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Summit Award for the second consecutive year on March 6.
Volmer, a native of Winner, earned his second Summit Award after maintaining a perfect 4.0 undergraduate grade-point average majoring in business administration. On the court, the junior guard has appeared in 31 games for Black Hills this season, making two starts. In 458 minutes of action for the regular season conference and tournament champion Yellow Jackets, he has averaged 3.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 47.1% from the field, 46.5% from 3-point range, and 75% from the free-throw line.
The RMAC's Summit Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA competing at the finals site of their respective sport's championship. Summit Award winners must compete in 20% of available competitions throughout the current season. All GPAs are based on a straight-grading scale to ensure consistency among nominees. All ties are broken by the total number of credit hours completed through the most recently concluded semester.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be sophomores or above and have participated in their sport at their institution for at least two years. They must also be active members of their teams and travel to and compete at the RMAC championship event.
The Yellow Jackets are going back to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight men's basketball tournament round for the third time in five years after securing a win over Dallas Baptist by a score of 76-62 on Tuesday, March 17. After being slotted as the No. 10-ranked team in Division II in the final polls and sixth in its region, Black Hills will be the No. 8 seed heading into the Elite Eight bracket.
With the victory, No. 8-seed Black Hills improved to 30-4 on the season and will face No. 1-seed Nova Southeastern (30-1) out of Davie, Florida, at 5 p.m. on March 25 at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
SIOUX FALLS — In her first national meet appearance, Augustana's Ashton Massey placed 14th in the women's pentathlon at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia on Saturday, March 14.
A sophomore from Menno High School, Massey took seventh among the group in the 60-meter hurdles, tying a personal-best time of 8.97 seconds. Massey went on to place 11th in the high jump with a 1.56-meter leap, and then had a 9.41-meter shot put mark. In the long jump, Massey was 14th in the field with a 5.12-meter performance before wrapping up strong, taking sixth in the 800-meter race for a personal-best 2:19.17. She scored a total of 3,523 points.
The Vikings will now move into the outdoor season, starting with a trip to St. Louis, Missouri, March 26-27 for the WashU Distance Carnival.
CRETE, Neb. — Colton Dillon completed his final indoor track and field season as a senior thrower for the Doane University men's team March 5-7.
The Tigers competed at the 2026 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships, tying for 33rd place during the three-day meet at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center in Gainesville, Florida. Doane had a total of nine team points, which all came in the throwing competitions.
Dillon, a Hanson High School graduate, posted a 12th-place finish in the shot put with a top throw of 15.97 meters. It was Dillon's third time qualifying for a national meet, including the 2024 indoor and outdoor competitions.
Doane's outdoor season will begin on March 28 with a trip to Kearney, Nebraska, for the Central Nebraska Challenge.
