There is a school of thought out there that you never take a running back in the first three rounds and never sign one to their second contract.
That thinking is being challenged by what Gibbs, Barkley, Bijan, McCaffery have done for their teams.

I like Allgeier a lot, actually... I've watched him play a good amount.

But I'm mad that we've taken Love off of the table on day one. I'm going to plant my flag, I don't think Arvell Reese or Mauigoa will be anything but mid-tier starters who probably don't even warrant a 2nd contract.

We're going to end up reaching for a player that would have gone 10-15 in a normal, non-terrible draft.

Really good rookie year then progressively worse after that.
The Falcons drafted Robinson in Allgeier's second season which is why his production went down after his rookie season. I like this signing, solid RB who can also catch the ball. Don't understand the Conner signing if they knew they would get Allgeier. He was one of my preferred RB in Free agency.

I think in drafts like this, you just want to draft a good starter and stop worrying about Mel Kiper value crap.

Time to reconsider the stereotype and dated answer regarding RB taken at the top of the draft:

see “Chiefs may force NFL to rethink the early running back stigma” by Lyle Graversen

From that article:

“Here is the list of running backs taken in the top 12 picks over the past 10 draft classes:

Ashton Jeanty - No. 6 - Las Vegas Raiders - 2025
Bijan Robinson - No. 8 - Atlanta Falcons - 2023
Jahmyr Gibbs - No. 12 - Detroit Lions - 2023
Saquon Barkley - No. 2 - New York Giants - 2018
Leonard Fournette - No. 4 - Jacksonville Jaguars - 2017
Christian McCaffrey - No. 8 - Carolina Panthers - 2017
Ezekiel Elliott - No. 4 - Dallas Cowboys - 2016

That’s seven running backs taken in the top 12 picks over the past 10 drafts. Of those seven, only one can even be argued to be a bust, and that is Leonard Fournette—and he still rushed for over 1,000 yards twice in Jacksonville and had over 40 career touchdowns.”

Now, if the Cards were a RT away from SB contention, by all means take a RT. Just look at all the RT's who have won the league MVP and SB MVP awards over the years. The teams who were mentioned for Love in mock drafts have taken measures to improve their RB room in the FA period. Is this because they follow the stereotype OR do they foresee a team like the Cards/Titans taking Love at the top of the draft?
