The Atlanta Falcons moved on from several key players over the offseason, including quarterback Kirk Cousins, linebacker Kaden Elliss and running back Tyler Allgeier. Cousins' release was expected, but there was some hope that Atlanta would bring back Allgeier.
The former fifth-round pick signed a two-year, $12.25 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. While Allgeier was initially projected to start for the first time since his 1,000-yard rookie season, that changed after Cardinals selected running back Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
And just like that, Allgeier will return to a backup role behind another top-10 pick. It's not all bad, though. Allgeier was listed as the starting running back on the ESPN All-Backup Team.
"Allgeier might have expected to be the starter in Arizona after he signed there in free agency, only for the Cardinals to use their first-round pick on Jeremiyah Love," wrote ESPN's Bill Barnwell. "The Falcons rotated Allgeier and Bijan Robinson by possessions as opposed to situations, so Allgeier is entirely capable of playing on all three downs. He's a perfectly viable starting back."
During his four seasons in Atlanta, Allgeier rushed for 2,876 yards and 18 touchdowns on 4.3 yards per attempt. His best season came as a rookie in 2022, when he rushed for 1,035 yards while averaging 4.9 yards per carry.
Allgeier's impressive start was quickly overshadowed when the team drafted Bijan Robinson with the eighth overall pick in 2023. Robinson and Allgeier formed arguably the best backfield duo in the NFL for a couple of years.
The Falcons have since signed Brian Robinson Jr. to replace Allgeier in 2026. While Robinson is the more versatile player, the team may have a hard time replacing Allgeier's physical running style this season.
Wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus and former Falcons kicker Zane Gonzalez also made the ESPN All-Backup Team.
