If that’s the case, why not just trade him to another team and actually get something of value as opposed to letting another talented guy walk in for absolutely nothing?

He would have given Budda a 5 year extension with 90% of the money deferred for another 5 years after that, continuing to hamstring the team's salary cap.

If the plan truly is to release him next year, why would they not just accelerate all this to this year’s cap instead of contiuining to create dead money for next year?

You can't accelerate money that's already been paid. The $3.775 million if/when he's released next year is what's already been paid on his before-today deal. Maybe that number goes up a little, but it won't be a ton.

Even less if they stretch it.

Great job by MO to create incentives based on actually being available. It’s a new era in Cardinal football. It may take a couple years to reap benefits from a W/L perspective, but you have to start somewhere when you’re trying to establish a sustainable culture.

Hopefully if that is the case, they trade him and not release him. He doesn't seem the type to sit out as he is at camp now. If he stays healthy and produces, we should get good value in return.
