Braves get updated trade cost for Twins' Joe Ryan that's very steep originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Braves are going to be searching for starting pitching at the 2026 MLB trade deadline. Chris Sale needs some more help behind him, and that could come in the form of just about any pitcher on the market.
Tarik Skubal has been strongly linked to the Braves this summer, and it makes a ton of sense for a World Series-contending roster. But Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan is under control for the 2027 season and might be a bit more feasible to land.
However, Jim Bowden of The Athletic gave the Braves an updated trade cost for Ryan that is very steep, as it would require Atlanta to part with two of their top-three pitching prospects to land the Twins ace this summer.
Braves' trade cost for Joe Ryan is incredibly steep
"It would probably take two of JR Ritchie, Cam Caminiti, and Didier Fuentes to pry Ryan away from Minnesota," Bowden writes.
What this updated trade cost would mean for the Braves is that they'd have to give up two of their three best young pitching talents within the organization.
Fuentes has already graduated from prospect status and has thrived in the Majors as a reliever for Atlanta this season, posting a 2.41 ERA with a 4-0 record and 38 strikeouts in 33.2 innings across 27 outings.
Ritchie has made his MLB debut, and the 23-year-old has a 4.53 ERA in nine games and 43.2 innings this season. While not the best, there's still potential here.
Caminiti, meanwhile, is a 19-year-old prospect who's yet to make his big league debut, let alone reach Double-A. He has a 4.08 ERA in 68.1 innings in High-A this season, and is the Braves' top prospect in their farm system right now.

Would two of those pitchers be worth it for Ryan? The Twins ace has a 3.36 ERA this season with a 6-5 record, 122 strikeouts, and a 129 ERA+ in 104.1 innings pitched in 19 starts.
Add in that Ryan is under club control through the 2027 season, and the Braves could get the rest of 2026, including the postseason, and all of 2027 with Ryan in the rotation.
The question the Braves might have to ask themselves is whether that extra year of control is worth the massive price, especially when a similar package might be able to land them Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers.
This is a very lofty trade cost for the Braves to add Ryan, but if they want to land the best pitcher possible at the deadline for both 2026 and 2027, then Ryan is their guy, and he won't be cheap to acquire.
