Just when it looked like Brandon Aiyuk's ongoing feud with the San Francisco 49ers couldn't get any more bizarre, the star receiver took things another step Saturday.
After spending the past week publicly campaigning to join the Washington Commanders, Aiyuk released a video to YouTube in which he claimed 49ers general manager John Lynch recently showed up at his house and apologized for head coach Kyle Shanahan's actions.
According to ESPN, Aiyuk also accused his former agent, Ryan Williams, of contributing to the breakdown in his relationship with the organization.
"We is not cool," Aiyuk said. "We won't be cool, and I will never be stepping in that building" outside of Oct. 19, referencing San Francisco's Monday Night Football matchup against the Commanders.
The comments only reinforce what Aiyuk has made clear throughout the week. He wants out of San Francisco and to play in Washington.
Earlier this week, the 27-year-old said he would sign with the Commanders "tomorrow" if the 49ers released him. He also held up a football with Washington's logo in Saturday's video, further fueling speculation about a potential reunion with former Arizona State teammate Jayden Daniels.
Of course, wanting to play somewhere and actually ending up there are two very different things — especially in the modern NFL.
Because Aiyuk remains under contract with San Francisco, the Commanders cannot publicly express interest in acquiring him without violating the NFL's anti-tampering rules.
Whether Washington would even pursue the veteran receiver if he became available also remains unknown, even when keeping Aiyuk's connection to Daniels in mind.
The relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers has been spiraling for months — and it's only continued to intensify as of late.
San Francisco voided the remaining guaranteed money in Aiyuk's contract last July after he failed to participate in team-directed rehab following the torn ACL, MCL and meniscus he suffered during the 2024 season.
The situation eventually escalated to the point where the 49ers placed him on the reserve/left team list after he stopped reporting to the team facility, which, ironically, occurred shortly after Aiyuk terminated his working relationship with his former representation.
Training camp is scheduled to begin next month, making the coming weeks a pivotal stretch for both sides.
Whether San Francisco ultimately grants Aiyuk his wish remains to be seen. But based on his latest comments, the possibility of repairing the relationship appears more remote than ever, with Washington remaining the only team Aiyuk has publicly embraced throughout the saga.
