Jan. 30—JAMESTOWN — Haley Attleson forced Jamestown High School girls' basketball fans to sit in their seats a little longer Friday night.

With less than a minute to play in the Blue Jays tilt against Mandan, Attleson, a senior for the Jays, laid in a pass from freshman Macey Neumiller to send the game to overtime.

"I was so excited," Neumiller said. "That play worked against them last time so I kind of had a hunch that it was going to work this time. I just threw it up and she caught it and put it in. I was so happy. She's awesome."

The Jays' momentum carried them through the four-minute overtime frame and resulted in a 57-54 win over the No. 2 team in the West Region. Jamestown's WDA record stands at 5-5 while overall, the team is 7-6. Head coach Andy Skunberg and company will be back in action on Tuesday hosting Bismarck St. Mary's at 5:45 p.m.

After falling behind 8-1 early in the first half, the Jays scored four of the next nine points to make it 13-5. Neumiller cut the Braves' lead to six with a layup with eight minutes to go in the first half. The Braves led 13-7. The freshman picked up an and-1 on the next possession to make it 13-10 Braves. Mandan went on an 16-9 run to end the first half.

Neumiller was leading the Blue Jays with seven points scored in the half. Anna Claire Bugbee was the main offensive producer for the Braves with nine of the team's 29 points scored.

The Blue Jays started the second half off with a 6-0 run that made it 29-25 Mandan. The Jays' rolling offensive forced the Braves to burn a timeout two minutes into the second half.

"We just couldn't get a shot to fall." Skunberg said of the first half. "We were playing hard, had a couple of unforced turnovers and just had to settle down. We came out in the second half, made some adjustments and did a good job executing then all of a sudden we started having a little bit of fun and that's when shots started falling. That was a heckuva team effort tonight, both offensively and defensively. I am proud of the girls — they worked hard."

Jamestown's defense smothered the Braves' chances at clear looks and clean shots in the overtime frame.

"Their two inside players are really good and we tried to eliminate a lot of their touches and open looks," Skunberg said. "We did a good job helping out with that and closing out on the shooters and forcing them to make shots. They weren't making shots too much in the second half and we did a good job of getting rebounds — it was kind of an inside-outside effort there."

With 2:45 gone in the frame, Mandan got its first clean shot by way of a foul on Hannah Attleson.

Sierra Gustavsson hit 1-of-2 to make it 51-50 with 1:15 to go in the frame but Neumiller still had plenty of juice. The freshman picked up an and-1 to complete a 3-point play and make it 53-51 Jays. Hannah Attleson went 2-for-2 at the line to make it 55-51 Jays with 18.7 seconds left.

Out of a timeout, Mandan's Mimi McAllister got sent to the line for the chance at three shots. The senior went 3-for-3 at the line with seven seconds left to make it 55-54. In the last seconds, Neumiller was fouled. She hit both shots to win it 57-54

"We've had two or three games now where, down the stretch, we've had pressure situations but who better than Macey Neumiller — the Elks free throw champ — to put on the line," Skunberg said. "She's been in that situation before. Hannah (Attleson) — the girl doesn't shoot much — but give her time and she does a great job. I am not hesitant at all to put them on the free throw line."

Neumiller was a perfect 10-for-10 at the line against the Braves. The freshman led the Jays in total scoring for the second-straight game with 27 points.

"She's a gamer," Skunberg said of Neumiller. "A couple shots didn't fall — but she's got a shooter's mentality — if it doesn't go in, keep shooting. She got confident and started hitting some shots and that helped. She's a great kid off the court too. She's very likable and she works hard. She puts in a lot of extra effort outside of practice."

Neumiller is in her second year with the Blue Jay varsity squad. She is averaging 13.4 points per game, is 40.7% from long range, 73.3% at the line and has accounted for 29 assists.

"I just try to contribute to the team in any way that I can whether it's points, assists or just my defense," Neumiller said. "Tonight my shots weren't falling so I tried to drive more and assist the ball. It helps a lot not trying to score all of the time and trying to contribute to the team instead."

With Neumiller's help, the Jays have won their last four games, including a win against Bismarck Century on Jan. 27. The Blue Jays have not won against Century in more than seven seasons.

"It's a fun brand of basketball that they are playing right now," Skunberg said. "They are playing with a lot of confidence."
