Feb. 3—JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown High School girls basketball team was reminded Tuesday night that all good things must come to an end.
Head coach Andy Skunberg's crew lost its first game since Jan. 6, dropping 68-61 to Bismarck St. Mary's. The loss puts Jamestown's record at 5-6 in the West Region and 0-2 against the Saints. Skunberg and company will be back on their home court on Friday hosting Bismarck Legacy. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
"They were just a little more physical than us tonight and got after it," Skunberg said. "Tip your hat to them. They changed up their game plan from the first time we played them and they executed it."
While it was the Saints who finished out the game — the Blue Jays still had some shining moments.
Macey Neumiller's collected five points on a play with 3:30 gone in the first half. The freshman was fouled on a 3-pointer officials deemed good. Neumiller made good on both shots to make it 10-4 with 13:01 left in the opening half. Neumiller was the Jays' offensive leader through the first half with nine points. She finished out the game with 23 points.
In part due to seven early Blue Jay turnovers, St. Mary's put up six unanswered to tie the game at 10. Mya Jones' 1-of-2 performance at the line gave the visitors' a one point lead with just under 10 minutes to play but Claire Marker got the Jays back in front with a two-point shot. Adisyn Yunck added to the Jays' skimpy lead with a big time shot beyond the arc to make it 15-11.
Jamestown collected 10 fouls in the first half. Through the game, Jamestown tallied a total of 24 fouls.
"We get a little timid (when we get in foul trouble)," Skunberg said. "Some of those were ticky-tacky, not very good or aggressive fouls. We need to eliminate the not very good fouls and stick to the aggressive fouls and we'll be fine. We just need to trust our defensive concept and be where we need to be. We've got to be moving our feet and not using our hands — all those little things."
Despite some messy play, Jamestown held a six-point lead at the halfway point.
That lead was not safe.
Led by Mataya Messer and Lily Edinger's combined 44 points, the Saints passed the Jays and took a 42-38 lead at the 10:36 mark of the second half. Neumiller's drive to the inside cut the visitors' lead to two but St. Mary's scored again on their next two possessions to take a 46-40 lead. A few minutes later, St. Mary's was up by double-digits."
Jamestown didn't quit.
"We were down 15 and we cut it to a one possession game but we just couldn't get over the hump," Skunberg said. "It's a game where we were there at the end. A couple of possessions and it could have been something different."
The Blue Jays have seven games left to play before the regular season ends on Feb. 24.
"There's a lot of season left," Skunberg said. "This one stings but we'll move on. We'll sleep on it tonight then we've got two days to get ready for Legacy."
