Dec. 16—JAMESTOWN — Claire Marker never stops.
With three fouls early in the Jamestown High School girls basketball contest against Bismarck Century, JHS head coach Andy Skunberg forced the junior to sit — but when she re-entered the game in the second half, she kept things moving.
"She came in and she played hard," Skunberg said of Marker. "We've been seeing that for two or three games now. Her motor never quits."
Unfortunately, one motor wasn't enough to power the Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
Jamestown fell 90-28 to Century in the Jays' conference opener. The loss puts Jamestown's record at 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the WDA standings. Head coach Andy Skunberg and company will be back in action on Thursday at Mandan. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
From the opening tip, Century was buzzing.
The visitors established an early 11-1 lead over the Jays.
With 13:14 left in the first half, Macey Neumiller notched a 3-pointer that cut the Patriots' lead to just seven but in the next two minutes the Patriots went on a 7-2 run to make it a 12-point game with 10:59 left to play.
Kaylie Welstad — a freshman for the Patriots — scored nine points in the opening half. Addison Weigel also put nine on the books, all by way of 3-point shots.
Haley Attleson's seven points were the most scored by any Blue Jay in the first 20 minutes of play. Attleson added six more points to the books in the second half for a team leading 13 points. Junior Lucy Falk was responsible for four points while Neumiller was credited with three. Marker's three points were scored in the second half.
"They are a really good team," Skunberg said of the Patriots. "They are very athletic and very quick and we couldn't keep up with them. They got on us early and we kind of moped around a little bit and didn't try to fight back."
Jamestown entered the halftime break down by 34 points.
Welstad and Kinely Thorton each notched 13 points to lead Century's scoring efforts. Weigel and Olivia Klimpel also cracked into double-digits scoring 12 and 11 points respectively. All but two of Century's players recorded at least two points scored.
"They shot very well," Skunberg said. "It seemed like every shot that went up went in for them. Tip your hat. They are a good team. They made it to the state championship last year and brought a lot of kids back."
Century's trap defense forced four turnovers by the Blue Jays. In the first half, the Jays committed 15 turnovers.
"We just have to make better decisions and make crisper passes — some of our passing were kind of weak," Skunberg said. "They are quick and they are going to jump on that. ... I told the girls, this is a marathon not a sprint. This is game one of WDAs. It's a long season to go. It's baby steps. This is an opportunity to see some stuff on film and get ready to go play Mandan."
