MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – The Berlin Brothersvalley High School girls basketball team did what good squad do – when some part of the game is not working, you find other ways to get it done.
The Mountaineers did not shoot the ball particularly well, so they started to make the extra pass and rolled past Wyoming Seminary 53-31 at Cumberland Valley High School to move into the PIAA Class 2A semifinals for the second year in a row.
The win advances the Mountaineers to the semifinals against Southern Columbia, a 48-35 winner over Mountain View, Tuesday at a site and time to be announced.
Berlin Brothersvalley (23-5), the defending 2A state champion, started slow, but picked it up by getting to the basket.
Junior Coral Prosser tallied six field goals in the lane and got some help from younger sister Bryn. The Mountaineers went 15 minutes before Sam Waker finally drained their first 3-pointer with just under a minute to go in the half. They led 26-16 at the half.
Despite a poor shooting first half, 0-for-8 from the arc, the Mountaineers played very good defense against the Blue Knights’ height. They made the 6-foot-2 Ella Stambaugh put the ball on the floor and a second person always stepped out on her.
Bryn Prosser did a solid job keeping her away from the basket. Stambaugh ended the game with six points, not scoring a basket until the final quarter.
Wyoming Seminary (19-7), the District 2 runner-up to Mountain View, did an excellent job of getting back to slow down the Mountaineers’ fast break, but struggled to find space to get off good shots. Stella Ruiz and Ellie Kersey combined for nine points in the opening half, but only knocked down a couple of foul shots in the final half.
The Prosser sisters combined to tally 18 points in the first half. They finished the game with 30 points, but got heroic efforts from Penny Stoltzfus (eight points), Mercy Sechler (eight points) and Walker (five first-half points).
“We worked hard on our defense this week, and I thought we made them work for shots,” Sechler said. “We knew they were a very good team, but we felt we were better. We are all able to guard anybody, as long as we communicate. The corner is my spot for shooting.”
“We played really good defense as a team tonight,” Berlin Brothersvalley coach Rachel Prosser said. “Sometimes the nerves get the best of you, and you shoot the ball a little too strong. We worked on defense and the nice thing is when someone got in foul trouble, someone else was able to step in. We knew Stambaugh was an excellent player. Rebounding was a key for us, trying to limit them to one shot. Penny did exactly what we wanted on offense and defense. Mercy came up big tonight.”
