RICHLAND TOWNSHIP — Berlin Brothersvalley began its PIAA 2A girls basketball title defense with a 65-43 victory over United, Friday, March 6, at Pitt-Johnstown.
"The girls played really hard," said Berlin coach Rachel Prosser. "It's been a long time since we've had a game, so it was nice to get on the court. They gave their all. They played really well tonight."
The Mountaineers have now won 11 of their last 13 PIAA playoff games dating back to the 2022-23 season.
Despite not playing since Wednesday, Feb. 25, Berlin was sharp at both ends of the floor against a United team that defeated Camp Hill, Tuesday, March 3, in a play-in game.
Junior Coral Prosser, who scored a game-high 23 points, recorded the first six points of the contest. Berlin closed the first quarter on a 12-3 surge, including five points each from sophomores Bryn Prosser and Sam Walker, for a 24-11 lead after one. Bryn Prosser finished with 18 points in the game, while Walker chipped in 11.

United (17-11) was the aggressor in the second quarter. The Lions went on an 11-2 run, highlighted by nine points from senior Lilly McGinnis, to pull within 29-22. McGinnis finished with a team-high 17 points.
However, the Mountaineers responded with a 7-0 spurt to close the frame and held a 36-22 advantage at the break.
Berlin (22-5) continued its run to begin the second half, notching the first 10 points of the frame for a commanding 46-22 lead.
"We got our eyes opened on that speed and athleticism they brought," United coach Collin Moore said of Berlin. "A mix of transition points and obviously, they made everything from outside, so that was tough."
The Mountaineers made eight 3-pointers in the game. Senior Mercy Sechler contributed 11 points. Berlin outscored United 19-7 in the third and led 55-29 after three.
Berlin meets York Catholic, a 46-14 winner over District 12 No. 3 seed Science Leadership Academy at Beeber, in the second round of the PIAA playoffs, Tuesday, March 13. It is the second straight season the Mountaineers and Fighting Irish collide in the postseason. Berlin bested York Catholic 71-52 in the second round at McConnellsburg High School.
The Fighting Irish won their 15th District 3 title this year. York Catholic is led by 6-foot-2 junior post player Jaydyn Brown, who holds offers from Shippensburg University and Indiana (Pa.).
"Every game is going to be tough here on out," Coach Prosser said. "We just got to commit to playing team defense and team offense and adjust to what's working and what's not working in that game."
