May 28—Decatur Heritage Christian Academy will be undergoing some significant changes in the upcoming sports year.
The school selected alumni Brayden Kyle as the men's basketball head coach this week, with former head coach Jason Marshall now becoming the head baseball coach for the Eagles.
"Marshall has been a great mentor to me and a great man in my life," said Kyle, who played basketball under Marshall at Decatur Heritage. "He brought me in three years ago with the leading phrase of 'Hey, when I'm done, I want you to take this over.'"
During his 13 years as a basketball coach, Marshall obtained 266 wins with 11 area championships, three Sweet Sixteen appearances, four Elite Eight appearances, two Final Four appearances, one state runner-up and one state championship.
Before his time at Decatur Heritage, Marshall played baseball at Northwest Shoals Community College and the University of North Alabama, later coaching baseball for five years.
"It's a new chapter of my life to be able to move from basketball to baseball," Marshall said. "Some opportunities arose this year, and I decided I'll go ahead and talk to my administration about the possibility of moving to baseball.
"It was a hard decision because we had some great kids coming back this year. But the timing was right for me to go ahead and make the move and open the door for Kyle to step in. That was the whole plan, to eventually step out and let him take over the program."
As Kyle's physical education teacher and basketball coach in high school, Marshall respected Kyle's leadership qualities. He was confident that the team would be put in good hands.
"When you look at wanting to turn a program over to someone, you want to make sure that person is a good fit and carries the tradition. Decatur Heritage has always been a really good basketball program, and it will be with him running it as well. He's young, but he will do a great job," Marshall said. "I have a son in seventh grade that's a basketball player. I had enough faith in Brayden to be able to coach my son one day."
Marshall's goal for baseball is to keep the program competitive and successful after being led by former head coach Steve Meek for 10 years, who retired but returned when the program needed a coach in 2025. Under Meek, Decatur Heritage had among the best football and baseball teams in the state. He has decided to retire again.
Kyle grew up an Eagle playing basketball, football and baseball. His father, Tommy Kyle, started the athletic program for the school in 1995 and served as the head coach until 2007. He stuck around as an assistant coach from Brayden Kyle's middle school to senior year and witnessed four of his children win the state championship in 2019.
Kyle was a walk-on quarterback for the University of North Alabama in 2022, later taking the role as a P.E. teacher for the Eagles and as assistant coach for the middle school boys for three years.
Looking into the future, Kyle steps into his new position with a goal of continuing the already successful basketball program's legacy.
"We're going to be a hard, gritty team, and we're going to be fundamentally sound and focus on the little things. My key word for this year is going to be 'respect.' We're going to respect God, respect the game and respect each other," Kyle said.
Kyle plans to focus on mental and spiritual growth to guide the team.
"People misunderstand the game by focusing solely on wins and losses," he said. "There's a small percentage of kids that will play college basketball. But, these young men will grow up to be husbands and fathers. My goal is, through the game of basketball, to grow great young men to be role models for kids below them."
