Family, friends, teammates and coaches gathered Saturday at Church of the Highlands in Madison to remember Noah Boler-Kyle, a former Decatur Heritage basketball standout who later played for Lee University.
More than 35 of Boler-Kyle's former teammates attended the service in person, and nearly 200 others watched online, a turnout many said reflected the wide reach of his personality and faith.
Heather Kyle, Noah's mother, said her son's warmth was one of his defining traits.
"He loved life and he loved people," she said. "He had the best smile and the sweetest heart."
Those who knew Boler-Kyle said he had a way of making people feel included, whether through humor, encouragement or his faith.
Lee University head basketball coach Bubba Smith, who recruited and coached Boler-Kyle, said that quality was evident from the moment he arrived on campus.
"He was so lighthearted, and even in the most serious moments, he found a way to bring joy," Smith said.
According to his father, Tommy Kyle, faith played a central role in Boler-Kyle's decision to play at Lee University rather than pursue one of his seven Division I offers.
"He asked me one night if I'd be mad if he didn't go Division I," Tommy Kyle said. "He told me Coach Bubba at Lee loved Jesus like I do, and that's why he wanted to go there."
Smith said the admiration Boler-Kyle showed teammates early in his career was eventually returned in full.
"His teammates became his biggest fans, and he was loved by all," Smith said. "You'll see that today with how many former players are here to honor him."
As the service closed, family and friends said they hope Boler-Kyle's story continues to inspire others to live with the same joy, kindness and faith that defined his life.
