I don't think Minshew is a real threat. I think he was brought in to be #2, regardless of who is starting. If JB goes down in a game, Minshew comes in. If JB get injured and misses time, I think it's totally plausible to start Beck and keep Mk shew in the mentor #2 role.

once again beck will be the reason i'm watching - if he can put last week on repeat there will be a qb competition for the #2 spot - atleast in fan's minds

some already have beck competing for #1 but that aint happening - brissett gives them the best chance to win and the team wants to win

but if beck balls out again idk - minshew might be screwed - minshew might be on the move - monti done painted himself in the corner with brissett being the starter - brissett made sure of that

but monti was also tickled pink yesterday when talking about beck - let's just call it now - not prematurely but nostrodomisly - if beck ends up being all that monti's going no where

if monti were to land the most holiest of draft picks - aka the prolific probowl pocket passer - then monti's going no wherez - maybe up in the rafters next to fitz because we're going on 40 years here and nobody's done it

or beck could suck - he could be mid - who knows - but for now beck has to manifest a duel between he and minshew

I forgot who the analyst was some years back, but the question was which QBs were the most mobile of all-time. Shockingly he said Dan freaking Marino? Again, wish I can remember the guy because he was a guy whose words one would respect and why I remember him saying it. The point is his perspective saw the QB in the NFL as being primarily a passer and emphatically said Mario could move in the pocket just enough to set up his passes with great form. I call that pocket presence but at this level there are people who put the most subtle things at a much higher level. Still would like to see the forty yard dash with such 'mobile' QBs as Marino, Aikman or Lomax- but this would have to take place during the day so the sundial could work.

Marino was a very nice athlete prior to his knee issues. Warren Moon was an underrated mover as well. He resisted using his legs because of the stigma of black QB not being capable of being a pocket QB at that time.

I think we can mostly all agree that at some point Beck will be our QB1. Week 4 is an east coast road game against the Giants. It’ll have to be be an ugly first 3 games for MLF to make that early of a switch. And I think Beck’s first start will be a home game. Those first 3 games may result in losses, but the Cardinals will be competitive early. I don’t think we’ll see Beck until around game 7 give or take.

I'd rather Beck come in week 8 and be good than come in week 4 and be overwhelmed. And ultimately it's not going to make any difference to this season either way, but might make a difference to Beck's career.

Reports from camp have been that he's been wildly inconsistent but improved over time. But sounds like still a long way to go despite some splash plays.

The Raiders have a weak defense that actually gets good pressure up front...THAT will have an affect on Beck



as his playing time moves closer to starting level players the game speeds up... He needs to adapt well to that increase in speed. Keep his composure. Maintain his footwork..his presence in the pocket...read how quickly a downfield window will close.

Mendoza on the other hand is facing a defense that doesnt really get much pressure and his offensive line should be a bit better than league average....so in many ways Mendoza could look better in this game than Beck while not actually playing much better...unless our secondary really kicks it in .....

Either way we should get a decent look at both young QB's

That's the thing we don't know about Beck, his ability to process info quickly. That will have as much to do with his development as anything. I would guess being as experienced as he is that he would be pretty good at processing info. But we'll see when the real games start.

Disagree. Not really interested in results as much as the things the QB controls. Pocket management, controlling the line, identifying blitzes, going through reads etc.

I need to see him do it consistently when it counts.

So far we have seen Beck have success in a preseason game against subpar talent that wasn't game planning for him.

I can't get excited until I see him have success in a couple real games with starter caliber NFL defenders running a complicated NFL defensive game plan. When the bullets start flying for real, that's when you find out who Beck really is.

I'm not sure Beck has upside as a starter, but he did look good in that first game

I have no idea why the Cardinals would name Jacoby Brissett as the starter back in March - setting up the contact issue, skipping phase 1, etc

There is no upside to it - he's not a starting NFL QB

In the 3rd, I thought Beck was worth picking

At his age/experience I would have opened up the competition.

The guy played a lot of ball in non-gimmick systems. Almost 1400 passes attempted. Big programs and big games.

As a Miami fan, he was sometimes a little slow getting the ball out, would get inconsistent on timing and short routes - going through spells where he'd just sail a ball or miss badly - in the NFL those can be picks

After some early success with going down the field, they tried to open up the offense for him to take more shots and it didn't work. He kind of tilts and launches and the ball hangs a little and ends up short. This led to some picks.

He also threw some really bad picks at really bad times - happy feet, pressure kind of picks - which you'd expect if he was less experienced

I'm not confident he can stand in against NFL level pressure and make strong decisions

I do think he has more mobility than he gets credit for

In the HOF gane he didn't really miss anything short or in the middle. He processed pretty quickly and made good reads.

Overall I thought he looked really good.

I didn't love the deep ball on the sideline as much as some. I think his arm didn't have enough there and it hung short bringing the receiver back into the field and slowing him down a little - WR took a pop, but was so open today it worked out.

In a regular season game you need to make that in tighter coverage and leaving the ball there it may get picked

I thought the TD throw to the right side of the end zone, I think to the TE, was a much better throw and one that he could replicate with and against starters

Provides an interesting story line for the season
