Does it matter?
That’s the question the first couple of days of training camp has yielded when it comes to quarterback Carson Beck.
He has been… a third round rookie.
That is most rookie quarterbacks are taken before they deserve to be taken as part of paying the quarterback tax, you pay it by having to over invest.
So, for a player like Carson Beck, he probably wasn’t worth the 65th pick, but if the Cardinals wanted a quarterback they had to pay that price.
That also means he likely wouldn’t light things up immediately, especially coming from a program that had just a lot more talent than their opponents most of the time.
My thing is that the only negative about Beck being bad in camp is that it may make them not be overly confident in putting him in games if they get to the point of needing to see someone other than Jacoby Brissett.
With Beck, the signs of needing time were there. He wasn’t elite at Georgia or even at Miami, really being more of a game manager on really good teams. Which is fine in the NFL, if you are on a really good team. Maybe the Cardinals first team offense will be that, and he can be the game manager that gives them a chance week-in and week-out.
Yet, from the scenes at camp, it has not been that way.
So that really asks again… does it matter?
