Tomlinson did nothing. Thompson can easily be replaced, he very rarely made any plays, he was just a reliable tackler. CC leaving does hurt, Nolen could replace the production, but easily might not.Who is coming back from injury?
Ojulari - has been a nothing.
LJ Collier - fringe roster player
Nolen - played 7 games for a league worst defense
Starling Thomas V - Monti has used two 2nd round picks, a 3rd, and a 4th on CBs since STV has been on the roster.
SMB - See Starling Thomas
Mack Wilson - Journeyman ILB. Defense did dip when he was out. Unclear if he can overcome the other deficiencies.
The argument is the bets players are the ones who left, CC, Tomlinson, and Thompson, and Monti did very little to add players who were better than them. The players who are coming back from injury were mostly players who were mid and Monti was hoping to replace with his draft picks.
I don't think this is a stretch argument.
Mack Wilson going down hurt us a ton. You can call him a journeyman, and maybe he is, but he was worlds better than what replaced him.
I am not trying to say the D is going to be good, it most likely won't be. But we still have a lot of young guys who hopefully will get better. There is reason to think it can be better than last year, that's not a very high bar to reach.
