DCU: Superman

My friends gave it a B+. It's mega goofy like a cartoon but craps so dark in the world that's fine.

But it’s going for that. It’s definitely in on the joke. At one point Lois even makes fun of him for trying to come up with catchphrases and hashtags cause he’s trying to be cool

My problem is my favorite superhero movies:

#1 The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger basically made me flee the theater when it was over.
#2. Spiderman 2. Alfred Moilina makes a very silly character very not silly and relatable. Takes the time to delve way into Peter Parker not just Spiderman. Aunt May is fantastic.
#3 Captain America: Winter Soldier The closest superhero movie to TDK. You feel the tension and the inevitability of the Winter Soldier. Robert Redford is perfectly cast as a villian that is unflustered at all times.
#4 The Crow - I wish I could place this higher. It's a constant reminder of how we were robbed of Brandon Lee yet also immortalizes him. He is just perfect as the Crow. Micheal Wilcott's Top Dollar isn't even a thing in the comics but he just eats up the screen.
#5 Iron Man. The starter of the MCU and just a tad better movie than Superman.

So you see these and the issue is all my favorite movies have shockingly good performances either as the hero or villian. This seems like none of that.

Good list and almost matches mine I'd take out Spiderman 2, move everything else up one slot, and then add Watchmen at 5.

Sure, but you’re holding the movie up to the absolute highest standards of all Superhero movies. If every superhero movie needs to be amongst the best of all time, you’re bound to be disappointed.

Also, the one constant in every review, good or bad, is that Cornswet shines as Superman. So, it seems like you’re making judgments about the movie having no signature performance without having seen it, so not sure how you know what the movie seems to or doesn’t seem to have?

First Blade’s pretty badass too, especially the epic opening rave setpiece.

And it did solid at the box office with 123 milllion, but not a smash hit by any means.

Just got out. Too much camp and too much SS2 vibes. Getting some food. When I get back will post more. Mixed bag for sure.

First the good. I really liked some of the actor/actress choices. David Corenswet is a worthy replacement for HC. I thought Nicholas Hoult was solid. So was Rachel Brosnahan and the rest of the cast choices were decent enough. The movie had some really cool scenes (some iconic Superman poses) and stuff that gave you the feels when the music hit. By the way, the new version of the song I thought was pretty solid as well. Overall the FX were solid minus some CGI design choices. Humor was a mixed bag. Some of the jokes hit and others did not. They kept the focus on Superman (which I know was a concern for some) but still had a good balance of the other characters (more on that below).

Now the bad. I thought the script was pretty subpar. It's like JG couldn't decide what he wanted the movie to be tonally at times. If you loved Suicide Squad 2 you might like this better than me but I hated some of the choices in that film and it was my least favorite Gunn film. This film had some of those same problems. This felt like an overreaction/course correction to the dark Snyderverse. The camp in this movie at times was beyond silly and over the top. So much so, that he was walking a fine line between acceptable camp and Joel Schumacher level of camp. Some of the jokes didn't land for me and some of the CGI completely pulled me out of the movie. Some of the CGI choices were beyond silly. Also, I had a problem with the character choices. Mr. Terrific just isn't a great character to begin with but they used him anyway. Hawk Girl? Again...why? Green Lantern is the only one that makes any sense for me in the menagerie of available characters from the Justice League. I get why they couldn't use the main ones coming off the Snyderverse but the choices were just blah.

This might be the most overrated movie of the Summer for me. I didn't hate this movie but I didn't love it either. I really wanted them to hit this movie out of the park. It just didn't for me.

Most of the CGI was really good but some of it was ridiculously silly. I thought the CGI at the end of SS2 was beyond dumb but I sort of understood it. To me though a couple choices completely stood out and for the wrong reasons. CGI should compliment the movie and not pull you out. The one sequence felt like they added a Pokeman in the middle of a Superman movie. It just seemed beyond silly. Another, Interdimensional creature (thankfully only in the background) felt like it should have been in a Ghostbusers movie or something. Krypto's CGI was good in some spots and bad in others.

P.S. The during credit scene and the end of credit scene might get the most useless of the year award.

Or your father’s Superman. I mean… it is wildly different than any version of Supes ever put on screen. A literal comic book come to life and I had fun.

And it got the most important piece right… Superman.

That said, it ain’t close to the best superheroes of all time. Its ain’t even close second tier great. It’s good… and fun and a fresh take, but I can see how some might not dig it.

Also, it’s my least favorite Gunn comic book project. Ain’t close to Guardians 1, 3 or Peacemaker S1. And it’s underneath Guardians 2 as well.

Ive never been able to get into Holland as Spider-Man. I think he’s horribly miscast. He’s clearly third in the pecking order IMO.
