True, but Donald and cooks will gobble up about $35-40 of that. They have a 2 maybe 3 year stretch before it blows up on them IMO
Yep. It also appears they are trying to be flashy for L.A. for PSL's, and as a general overall fan building strategy. It'll be interesting to see how they treat future offseasons. They can't do this every year. But the L.A. approach is to make big splashes and try to buy your championships.
The cap is only guaranteed to go up through 2020. After that we don't know what's going to happen, but odds are flat to down. Even this CBA, where the cap exploded overall, the cap was basically the same (and even a little down) for about 3 years, besides the uncapped year. 2011 was lower then 2009. 2012 was roughly the same as 2009. A similar event could occur. Imagine what happens then if you got a bunch of guys coming due in 2019-2020-2021 and need to sign them to big contracts. A potential nightmare for the Rams.
Good GM's are going to try to avoid big spending increases on their teams for 2020-2022 or so until they figure out what exactly is going to happen. No trend lasts forever. There's no law saying salary caps must go up by 10 million a year when new CBA's are signed, or even up at all. The current trend is only applicable for THIS CBA.
No 1st or 2nd round pick this year, no 2nd next year. Potentially lower picks in each round while the 'Ram it' band is together, gives less opportunity to replenish old talent. What you see is mostly what you get. Bargain free agents band-aids like what we did could help.
There's going to be some serious turnover in that roster starting next year. Overall from my count there's 11 projected 2017 starters who are either going to be free agents, restricted free agent, or on their 5th year option next year.
Those 11 are; Marcus Peters CB, Brandin Cooks WR, Todd Gurley RB, Rodger Saffold G, Jamon Brown RT, Rob Havenstein G, Suh DT, Donald DT, Longacre DE/OLB, Bryce Hager ILB, LaMarcus Joyner.
For 2020, assuming all the guys above have been re-signed, there are four more (Brockers, Talib, Higbee, Whitworth) not counting Zuerlein the kicker. Talib and Whitworth likely will be replaced at that point.
It currently looks like they'll have a lot of space in 2019 because most of their starters are either still on rookie contracts or will be free agents. That will change or those players will be gone and replace with inferior guys. We're also talking about some of the most highest profile and/or crucial positions in football. LT, CB, WR, 2 DT. They won't be cheap. They might also want to lock in Goff early which might throw a wrench into things for 2019 or 2020. Goff could be 30/yr.
