OMFG...Warren Moon, I loved how you played, but what a moron. So this guy keeps making stupid decisions, and this is the kind of stuff you're whispering in his ear? Yeah, sure, THIS will help him get on the straight and narrow :sarcasm: What a tool. Yeah, after all the stuff done by Newton, he's getting criticized because of his race. Suuuuuure.

"Ex-NFL star Warren Moon has claimed that QB prospect Cam Newton is being unfairly criticized in the media because Newton is black."

Warren Moon isn't giving advice to Cam Newton. They're on opposite sides of the country. Moon is a broadcaster for the Seattle Seahawks.

Anything to smear a prospect you don't like, though, right, Stout?

Doesn't Warren Moon have a wife to beat? (Second wife because the first got out...)

I wouldn't give Moon the time of day. He is a POS.

BTW - Moon is advising Cam and his family. In his own words he is not Cam's personal QB coach he is "more of a consultant and advisor to the family."

Do a quick search of the web and you'll find tons of articles linking Moon and Cam before the draft...even before these ridiculous comments by the wife-beater.

Warren Moon sucks, it doesn't mean Cam does, but some will say it does. :D Moon did go through some racial doodoo, but he turned out to be doodoo. He should shut his pie hole.

I heard about this a few days ago & I'm sick & tired of people playing the race card!!!

Cam Newton & his Dad are to blame for the questions teams, GM's, coaches, draft gurus & fans have about this kids skepticism about his character!!! Nobody else. Mallet has been ripped by draftniks about his leadership, attitude & supposed drug use & I'm quite sure he's getting drilled by NFL teams about the same things in his meetings. Gabbert is questioned for his spread offense & 1 good season. Locker is questioned because of his accuracy, college production & easy private workout.

Loved you as a player Warren, but the white QB's are getting questioned for many of the same reasons your boy Newton is!!! It's the NFL teams jobs to find out if these guys are the team too lead their franchises for years. Hey Warren, I bet the same questions were asked by NFL teams of Akili Smith, JaMarcus Russell & Ryan Leaf also!!! Give me a break Mr. Moon!!! Stop playing the race card because IMO it doesn't apply here & doesn't help the cause.

Warren Moon apparently didn't pay attention to the draft last year. People we talking about how Clausen was fake and seemed very scripted. It is the exact same stuff being said about Newton.

I understand why people use the race card. There are way too many stupid people left in this world that believe non-white people are inferior, but I'd like to hope there are fewer of them left, especially in pro sports. If we ever are going to get past this we have to stop using it.

As a person or as a player?

As a player, he was a no brainer for the Hall of Fame. If he didn't have to play in the Canadian league his first few years as a pro, he would've held every NFL career passing record in the book. As it was, he was at the top, or in the top 5, of all important passing categories.

As for the "wife beater" charges, he was acquitted by a jury. Even so, he underwent years of therapy. Google it and you can find many interviews where he talks about it. He was also arrested for two DUIs, he was under the legal limit for the first and refused to breathalyze for the second. He admitted to reckless driving for both arrests and took his punishment.

As for these comments about Cam, I'm sure he's flashing back to where he was overlooked for the NFL when he came out of college. When he graduated, black QBs were still almost unheard of, and none had huge success yet. It's a different time and place for Cam, race is not the reason he'll drop in the draft. He'll drop because he just isn't that good of a passer. If we took him at #5, I know I'd puke. :barf:

Mike Sando has a good blog going at ESPN on Moon---Sando understands Moon on this one---not that he agrees with Moon's argument necessarily, but that he sees why Moon thinks the way he does.

Let's face it...there are some positions in the NFL where the preponderence of players are either white or black---BUT---it goes BOTH ways:

QBs: mostly white
RBs: mostly black
OL: mix
TE: mix
WR: mostly black
DEs: mostly black
DT: mix
LB: mix
DBs: mostly black

As I studied tapes of Ryan Kerrigan and matched his performances and his measurables (same height, 40 speed, cone drill and shuttle quickness, etc.) with Robert Quinn's and Da'Quan Bowers'...the thought occurred to me that for those drafting Quinn and Bowers the hope is you are getting either a version of Demarcus Ware or Julius Peppers...while if you draft Kerrigan you hope you are getting a version of Jared Allen. And no one would take Allen over Ware or Peppers.

But---will Quinn and Bowers, both of whom only mustered one very good year of NCAA football---even come anywhere close to playing like Ware and/or Peppers?

These kinds of hopes and comparisons are what makes the draft so intriguing...but there is a proto-type and/or stigma attached to many of the comparisons.

It also doesn't help Warren Moon's or Cam Newton's cause when a highly touted player like Vince Young implodes...especially when it just happened this year.

People will almost always draw comparisons---many of which are just plain unfair.

Moon was a stud on the field, paved the way so to speak. This little race card outburst of his isn't helping Newton at all. I can get over a DUI or two, but life is sorta like a strip club, you just don't put your hands on the ladies! :D

Warren Moon= Idiot

Cam Newton=Idiot

Since they have so much in common there is so many good reasons why Moon is advicing Newton.

I jest, I jest.

That's kind of funny considering he stated to Collin Cowherd that he has/does work with Newton and Locker. So they must be together at some point regardless of where he lives.

Nice post Stout.

Warren Moon spent 6 seasons in the CFL, and believes to this day that racial profiling (black men are too dumb to play the position) kept him out of league until they couldn't ignore his record throwing and championships in the CFL.

That he'd be sensitive and perceive a bias, perhaps racial, in some of the description of Newton by a writer who never met the kid, nor spoke directly to coaches and players, can be understood if not approved.

Isnt this the same thing Tim Tebow went thru last year..

Cam Newton's a better quarterback than Tim Tebow is. The discussion of Newton has nothing to do with mechanics, which was (correctly) the big issue with Tebow (along with accuracy).

Absolutely. But Cam is a huge question mark on motivation and intangibles, where Tebow had it in spades.

Tebow is a terrible quarterback.

And Cam will be too.

I don't understand how "motivation and intangibles" are a question with Cam. He's by all reports an incredibly hard worker and great leader. There's a "character" question with him with regard to off-the-field behavior, which Tebow clearly had in spades. But I think that Cam is a better quarterback now than Tebow ever was.

Whether that translates to the pro game is an open question. But the opprobrium leveled against Cam on threads like this (it's not like Cam reached out to Warren Moon, and it's not clear that Moon has any greater role in Cam's development than someone who calls on the phone from time to time) seems to go far beyond questions about Cam's ability as a quarterback.

The comparisons being made about Ryan Leaf defy explanation.

First--nice that you make a completely stupid post and never acknowledge how bad it was--you just pull an ostrich lol. Second, the problem is that Cam Newton is NOT a better QB. The discussion about Cam Newton has been about character because he's so completely inept in how he handles himself, and his background is sullied; there's PLENTY to pick apart as far as mechanics. He has yet to show he can play under center, and he still has problems making all the throws.

Character concerns AND mechanical concerns = I want no part of the kid. He is way too much of a risk for me.

Moon has a point, considering his own history with breaking into the NFL, but I wouldn't say that racism is the main factor with Newton's detractors.

Like K9 has mentioned, Tebow experienced the same kind of scrutiny during the build up to the draft itself last year. One could say that it was based upon upon his skills as a college QB versus what an NFL QB needs to be successful. However, it could be argued that there was an anti-religious aspect to the criticism.

Bottomline, in my opinion, is this: Where there's smoke, there's fire...but sometimes people look for the fire when there is no smoke.
