Why would a position coach pull out of defensive coordinator opportunities? It sounds like he knew he wasn't getting a DC job. I would think that every position coach aspires to a head coaching position, OC or DC position.

Regardless I'm fine with Pleasant or Bullen for our DC.

Big pay raise and promise of the DC job if Matt Burke gets a HC job next offseason.

Lots of "ifs" and maybes, and waiting a year, verses a chance to get the DC job right now. Still doesn't make sense to me, but what do I know.
It is the Ben Johnson mentality. Patiently waiting for the ideal situation.

We need to make a decision post effing haste here.
based on the Vasso news, and the Rivera statement...Im guessing the decision has already been made. Team just cant announce until all the super bowl hype is done with.
soo likely Tuesday...maybe monday, but the NFL probably wants the news cycle to start with the super bowl....so tuesday

Wait, that's a good thing?

I know he did well in Denver, but I believe that Payton is holding him accountable

Here he was not good

In 2020 and 2021 he was good. It's just a scheme, the scheme is very rarely the issue. It's the players you have for it.

Right? We don't want Vance, because of his previous experience in AZ and his defense scheme, but we want Bullard because he uses Vance's scheme?
I don’t completely agree with your point, ROC. I think Vance Joseph was okay with the Cardinals, and now he has multiple All Pros on Denver’s defense. Some will say that Joseph is only successful because he now works with studs, but no, he made them studs. They are mostly players that other teams didn’t want or later rounds draftpicks.

Last season, Charlie Bullen was behind one of the biggest in-season turnarounds I have ever seen. I think I still prefer Pleasant, but Bullen is certainly a good alternative.

Good indictment of the Gannon/Rallis regime,

I wanted to elaborate on the coaching. IMO the Cards could well have been the worst coached team in the NFL. I think I know why because I’ve seen this before, sadly often in AZ. There are two philosophies of coaching. Mold the personnel to the system the coaches design or mold the system to the personnel. I believe the Cards thought they had the job security to mold the players to the system. They were wrong. The offense was less guilty of this than the defense, which may be why Petzing quickly got a job. I think he wanted a run first offense to open up play action for the passing game. They didn’t need a great line as they didn’t intend to throw deep and therefore time to throw wasn’t an issue. When injuries destroyed the running game, the wheels came off the offense. Teams weren’t threatened by the run or by throwing deep, so they crowded the line. Since they were more dependent on the passing game to move the ball, the lack of time to throw was disastrous.

On defense it was mostly Gannon’s ego that did them in. The Cards stubbornly stuck to a four man pass rush, even when it was totally ineffective. Rallis either agreed with the strategy or wasn’t strong enough to oppose Gannon. Much like the RB issue, on defense the CB unit was destroyed by injury. With a failed pass rush the Cards were easy victims. Only an incompetent coach would continue with a strategy that was clearly failing. This was ego personified.

100% this. We have seen it before. Will never forget Whisenhunt saying "the system works" which is basically the same scenario with JG.
