NEW YORK - This is Elmer Rodriguez's start at Citi Field, but you wonder how long he'll remain in the Yankees' rotation.
Does he have one more start coming up, or might today's outing be it for E-Rod for a while, with Subway Series I on the line against the Mets?
There is a Gerrit Cole factor involved.
On Saturday, Cole made his latest minor league rehab start and it was a good one. He yielded one run over 5.1 innings (86 pitches) and reached 99-mph with his fastball.
According to manager Aaron Boone, "the plan right now'' is for Cole to make one more rehab start before moving into the Yankees' rotation, though there appeared to be some wiggle room there.
As an organization, they hadn't yet sat down with Cole as of Sunday morning to discuss things, since he'd just pitched on Saturday night.
But the Yankees have proceeded with patience and caution with Cole, coming off Tommy John surgery in March of 2025.
