Why Reeling Red Sox Must Capitalize On Soft Schedule This Week originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have had a tough schedule to begin the year, especially lately. Their last three series came against the best team in the American League (the Tampa Bay Rays), the best team in the National League (the Atlanta Braves) and one of the hottest teams in baseball (the Philadelphia Phillies).
The Red Sox lost all three series, falling to 19-27.
This week, however, they finally get a break in the schedule for what feels like the first time this season. Boston has back-to-back series against teams with losing records in the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins.
The Royals are 20-27 and have been ice-cold lately, losing six of their last seven games. They also have one of the worst offenses in baseball and are averaging just 4.02 runs per game.
If the Red Sox cannot have a winning week this week against the Royals and Twins, then they may never again in 2026.

If the Red Sox keep pitching well and score a few runs, they'll have a great chance to win the series.
The Twins have also struggled this year, going 21-26. They've been even worse on the road at 8-13 with a minus-18 run differential, putting Boston in a good spot to earn its first series win at Fenway Park since early April.
The Red Sox have only had two weeks with a winning record this year, but this is a golden opportunity for their third. They need to start stringing wins together and building momentum if they want to turn their season around, and this is the perfect opportunity to do so.
If they miss it, they likely won't get another chance like it until early July when they face the Los Angeles Angels, Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox in three consecutive series. By that point, it may be too late.
