Sonny Gray has been one of the Boston Red Sox's most reliable pitchers this season, especially lately.

With the last-place Red Sox coming off a rough 8-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, Gray gave them a much-needed boost in Monday's series opener against the Kansas City Royals.

The three-time All-Star dominated the Royals over six-plus innings, keeping them off the board until the seventh and pitching Boston to a 3-1 victory. His nine strikeouts were a season high and he threw 54 of his 80 pitches for strikes, allowing just five hits and one walk.

Gray has been phenomenal for the Red Sox all season, but especially since returning from the injured list on May 6. He's 3-0 with 17 strikeouts and just two runs allowed in 17 innings over his last three starts, improving to 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA on the season.

"My one goal is to win the games that start. That's all I really want to do," Gray told NESN after Monday's win.

Boston's 6-2 in his eight starts this year, so he's crushing that goal so far.
