LEXINGTON — The Frederick Douglass High School girls basketball program features a pair of future Miss Basketball contenders, and both showed their promise Wednesday.

Junior Jaelee Knowles posted 15 points and eight rebounds and freshman Tamia Waide added 12 points as the Broncos whipped Henderson County 44-23 in the first round of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

The 5-foot-11 Knowles is on pace to become Frederick Douglass’ all-time leading scorer next season and has scholarship offers from Northern Kentucky, Toledo and Western Kentucky. The 5-7 Waide is ranked among the state’s top freshmen.

Ranked No. 8 in the state, Frederick Douglass (25-7) will face the Assumption-Calloway County winner in a quarterfinal at 11 a.m. Friday.

A’Tylia Green scored 11 points to lead No. 15 Henderson County (24-10), which shot just 15.4% (6 for 39) and committed 17 turnovers.

This story will be updated.
