LEXINGTON — Behind a shutdown defense, the Assumption High School basketball team reached the state championship game for the first time in 27 years.
The Rockets held Taylor County scoreless in the third quarter on their way to a 48-29 victory in Saturday’s semifinals of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
No. 2-ranked Assumption (27-5) will face the George Rogers Clark-Simon Kenton winner in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game.
Assumption is 0-1 all-time in state final, falling to Lexington Catholic 57-42 in 1999.
On Saturday, Ashlinn James posted 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the Rockets.
Up 23-17 at halftime, Assumption outscored Taylor County 14-0 in the third quarter. The Cardinals were 0 for 8 from the field with four turnovers.
No. 9 Taylor County (29-7) finished with 18 turnovers, and Assumption converted them into 23 points.
Freshman Kenndey Deener scored nine points to lead Taylor County. Deener was named the Gatorade Kentucky Girls Basketball Player of the Year on Friday.
