It could also be the failure of a mobile but less-than-stout D-Line in the 3-4 to keep blockers off the LB's.

No its the fault of the coaching staff for having Dlinemen like Dan Williams and Carter and Holliday on the Bench while Darnell Dockett, Nick (Brian Robinson) Eason and Calais Campbell play DT.

During the 80 TD yard drive I was talking about in another thread where the Cards just got steamrolled they were in that 2-4 I've been concerned about since last season again with Dockett and Campbell at DT when Hightower ran for 20 yards.

Oh and Mitch, the Cards were leaving edge rushers unblocked again.

At what? I keep hearing it but never see it. He's decent in coverage but his run stopping ability leaves alot to be desired.

How can you try to be a 3-4 defense without 4 or 5 solid LB's, and a powerful unmovable NT?

That is a fundamental flaw placed squarely on the shoulders of the front office, scouting and coaching staff.

Take a look at what the Patriots are doing this year. They have incorporated a 2 TE offense with a basic philosophy. Try to stack up and stop them from running and either TE creates a matchup nightmare in the passing game.
Okay, let's fool them. Let's play 6 db's and what do they do? They run the ball down your throat which sets up play action.
Crap like that just doesn't happen. It is designed.

Nothing against Horton because I do like the more aggresive style, but this organization should have gone out and signed a true experienced DC that could adapt to the personel. It is so obvious to many of us we have the personel to be a better 4-3 D than we do for a 3-4. HOWEVER, since we are hell bent on being a 3-4 and we have a "Steeler" taught 3-4 DC , well by golly, that's what we are going to do.

He could have been brought in by Whiz saying you will get the DC job but you have to turn the D into a true 3-4. Also with the clause do with what you've got. The front office will bring in some new players to help but you must run an aggressive 3-4.

He could of said he can turn this defense into a top ten in the league but it won't be a 3-4 with this personnel, Whiz overrules saying it is either a 3-4 or no job for you.

We are a 43 defense? Where are the linebackers (aside from Daryl Washington who is a stud in the current D) and defensive ends for our 43 defense? Switching to a 43 defense would just be going around in circles. The only player who isn't being used to full strength in the 34 D is Dockett since his strength is shooting his gap every play instead of read and react.

Totally agree with this statement. I do not believe this coaching staff has a clue on how to get the best out of what they have. Whiz insists we play a 3-4 when the talent is a better fit for a 4-3.

In no way, shape or form is Lenon 'real good'. He is a passable starter if playing next to a stud like Washington. We saw this weekend how godawful he is when he has to be 'the guy' at MLBer. Passable starter/spot starter when next to a stud, and a complete dud when leading the defense.

A lot of people put a lot of faith in Horton even though it was his first gig as DC and the Secondary was the weakest part of the Steelers defense. Of course that's like saying the weakest part of Ali was his left hook. So I don't know why anyone would expect major improvement right away just because Davis was gone and Horton was here. But many of you did.

I'm seeing a lot of the same defensive alignments as last year. Blitzes look somewhat different but aren't that much more effective.

I'm thinking that Horton just didn't have time to put in anything really new, we lost both our starting CBs from last year, he's a rookie DC, and the Cards were pitiful on defense to begin with. Not exactly a recipe for having even a mid level defense this season. No matter where the new DC came from.

I'm not blaming Horton. And with the way this off season was nothing can really be evaluated yet.

What I'm saying is maybe the Cards could have gone out and gotten Wade Phillips, a proven experienced DC. Horton is a rookie coming into a very difficult situation. He is learning on the job. Maybe with this group and the circumstances this year it is the perfect time to let him learn.

But keep this in mind. He is now our 3rd DC under Whiz. At what point do we place blame on the system? At what point do we blame the scouting staff and the front office for not getting the right personel? At what point do we say, "You know what? Joey Porter simply cannot be asked to drop into coverage"?
