As the community continues to mourn Rondale Moore, Trinity High School football star turned NFL wide receiver, the New Albany Police Department is continuing to investigate.
Moore was found dead in the garage of a property in the 1600 block of Ekin Avenue in New Albany Feb. 21, according to previous reporting. He was 25 years old.
Here's what we know so far:
In a statement provided to USA TODAY, New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said Moore died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Due to consideration for Moore's family, we are not releasing specific case information," he added.
A spokesperson for the Floyd County Coroner's Office said Moore's autopsy has not been completed.
A New Albany, Indiana, native, Moore transferred from New Albany High School to Trinity High School to play football in 2016. He was a first-team All-State selection as a senior at Trinity in 2017, where he helped the team win a state championship with an undefeated season. After graduating high school in 2018, Moore went on to play three seasons at Purdue. As a freshman, he caught 114 passes for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns, became a first-team All-American and won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player.
In 2021, Moore was a second-round NFL draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals, where he played for three seasons before he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2024. He missed the entire 2024 season after suffering a knee injury during training camp. Moore was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 2025, though he suffered another knee injury during a preseason game against the Houston Texans, forcing him to sit out for the season.
Moore's death prompted a number of tributes from previous coaches, including University of Louisville football coach Jeff Brohm, who coached Moore at Purdue. Moore originally committed to the University of Texas at Austin before deciding to attend Purdue, according to previous reporting.
"Rondale Moore was a complete joy to coach. The ultimate competitor that wouldn’t back down from any challenge," Brohm, a fellow Trinity alumnus, said in a post to X Feb. 21. "Rondale had a work ethic unmatched by anyone. A great teammate what would come through in any situation. We all loved Rondale. We loved his smile and competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with. We offer all of our thoughts and prayers to Rondale and his family. We love him very much.”
In a statement to X Feb. 21, Purdue football officials said Moore would be remembered as a legendary Boilermaker, adding their thoughts and prayers are with Moore's loved ones.
Trinity High School remembered Moore in a statement posted to Facebook Feb. 22.
"Rondale was a wonderful young man — a relentless competitor, a humble teammate, a respected leader, and a serious student. He represented Trinity with pride in our halls, on Friday nights, at the college level, and on the professional stage," the post states. "More importantly, he treated people well. Younger players looked up to him. Coaches trusted him. Teachers appreciated him. He made the building better simply by being in it."
Moore also received tributes from members of the NFL, including the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings. In a statement posted to X Feb. 21, the NFL Players Association said Moore's death serves as a reminder to prioritize mental health and for players to check on their teammates.
"In moments like this, we are reminded of how much our players carry, on and off the field," the post reads.
