The Memphis Grizzlies finally brought the Ja Morant era to an end on June 29, reportedly trading Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray.
Morant had been at the center of trade rumors for months, and the Grizzlies made it clear that they were planning to rebuild their roster around Zach Edey, Cedric Coward and No. 3 overall pick Cameron Boozer. That meant a Morant trade was inevitable, and it finally happened on the eve of NBA free agency.
The Grizzlies did not ultimately get any draft pick compensation in exchange for Morant, but they did get a pair of players. After the trade, Memphis has 19 players on standard contracts. The limit during the season is 15, so there's plenty of work to be done between now and the start of the season to further revamp the roster.
Here's what to know about Grant and Murray.
The 2026-27 season will be Grant's 13th in the NBA. He started his career with the Philadelphia 76ers as a second-round pick out of Syracuse, and he's carved out a successful career with several different teams since then.
Grant had been with the Blazers since the 2022-23 season. He averaged 18.6 points per game. The 6-fot-7, 213-pound Grant would join a crowded Grizzlies wing rotation, but he would give Memphis a scoring punch.
Grant signed a 5-year, $160 million deal with the Blazers in 2022. He has two years left on that deal, though the final year (for the 2027-28 season) is a player option for $36.4 million.
Murray was the No. 23 overall pick out of Iowa in 2023, and he's been with the Blazers since then. He played in a career-high 23.4 minutes per game in 2025-26, averaging 5.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He's the younger brother of Kings forward Keegan Murray.
The 6-8, 218-pound Murray would also be part of the Grizzlies' wing rotation.
He's going into the final year of his rookie contract and will make $5.3 million next season. He'll be a restricted free agent next summer.
