After five innings of baseball on Friday afternoon, UNC appeared well on its way to a Game 1 Super Regional win against USC.
After seven innings, North Carolina found itself on the wrong side of a 9-5 result. As a result, the Diamond Heels will now face elimination in Game 2, on Saturday at 2 p.m.
UNC started quick with four runs in the first four innings. Jake Schaffner plated Tyler Howe on a second-inning single, followed by a Gavin Gallaher sac fly. Ryan Lynch allowed a third-inning solo shot to the Trojans, but Erik Paulsen doubled in Macon Winslow and later scored.
North Carolina coach Scott Forbes pulled Lynch just before the sixth inning ended, then the wheels started falling off. Walker McDuffie allowed a go-ahead grand slam to Dean Carpentier, then USC added three more runs in the seventh.
The Diamond Heels failed to generate a single run in the sixth-ninth innings, despite putting a few guys on base. Schaffner, Paulsen and Owen Hull were the only batters to generate multiple hits.
If UNC wants to extend its season on Saturday, offense has to produce throughout against arguably the toughest pitching staff it'll face all season. North Carolina can't have another bullpen blowup. Jason DeCaro has to be on his game, with recent struggles a slight concern. Forbes has to manage his pitching staff correctly.

With how Game 1 started, the ending came as a major shocker. UNC's usually-strong bullpen faltered, while offense couldn't do anything late.
USC is searching for its first trip to Omaha in 25 years. DeCaro, the Tar Heels' staff ace, doesn't have his best stuff as of late.
North Carolina needs to hit throughout, but the Trojans simply play hungrier baseball and advance to the College World Series.
