We were still season ticket holders and living in PHX then. What a great game. We walked out in the field after that game as well.
My Uncle lost my Grandpa after that game in the chaos.

And I think we just left him in Tempe and somehow he found his way back to the House. Is that right @Ouchie-Z-Clown - or Uncle Mickey just left him there because he had no way to find him... this was pre-cell phone and he waited like an hour by the car where Grandpa had no clue where it was? I just remember getting back home and Mom telling us Grandpa called the house from Tempe, had no clue where he was and I think took a cab home.

Smith was vastly underrated in a line of outstanding players. He was willing to do the dirty work.
and then Ferguson treated him like that dirt in negotiations.

side note: there was a brief time where I was friends-ish with Big Bob's daughter and we were invited up for a weekend of training camp and had dinner with Bob and the whole fam at Buster's. It took a lot of restraint the entire meal not to ask him what the hell was he thinking letting Jamir Miller get away.

here is what i was told from someone in a position to know:

Bill Bidwill Jr (Mike's brother) was working for the team. He negotiated the massive (at the time) Jake Plummer contract extension after the 1998 season.

Unfortunately -- the only person who knew that he was doing this was Bill Sr. NOBODY else in the front office knew.
Bill Jr got take to the cleaners by Leigh Steinberg, Plummers agent. Plummer had two more years to go on his rookie deal.

As a result of the cap hit from that contract -- there was no money to resign Jamir Miller and Lomas Brown.

This is sounds entirely plausible. Stupid freaking football team.

Was this the game they tore down the goal post & carried it down Mill Ave?

Those player losses destroyed the team, stripping them of their leadership. It also killed any chance of Plummer being a success in AZ. Don’t forget it also cost them Larry Centers who was a huge loss for Plummer’s style. I still think if Dollar Bill knew how to run a winner the Cards were in position to contend for several years. Foolish mistakes!

That's the wrong picture, here is the right one!

of note: there is no GM in the org. Larry Wilson was kindaaaaa GM (who by all accounts, a good guy, a good football mind but very deferrential). Ferguson and Graves were involved. No clear lines of authority on exactly who was responsible for the roster.

the aftermath of all this was a reason Bill Jr's stature / responsibility in the team went wayyyyyy down. Ultimately left when Mike became the guy

In 1999, Arizona Cardinals GM Bob Ferguson insulted defensive tackle Mark Smith during contract negotiations by suggesting if his $325,000 tender wasn't enough, he should see what fast-food employees make. Smith demanded a trade, feeling disrespected and that the team reneged on a pay raise, but Ferguson later apologized.

that might have been after beating the Cowboys the previous year in 1997... beating them for the first time after like 18 consecutive losses... which led to a glorious field charge (which I was also a part of)... in Week 2... post OT, when Butler doinked in the Game-Winner... which was pathetically only a 22 yard FG... and then we lost our next 6 games in a row en route to a 3-13 season.

That's right. I remember now it was against Dallas after kicking a FG to win it.

side note - that 1997 year was really reminiscent of last year where the team started 1-7 but EVERY GAME was a ridiculous heartbreaker. And I remember then, the same thing said about that team that people were saying about last year - Is this the best 1-5, 1-4 team in the league? And I knew the answer was a resounding no. Bad teams find ways to lose and then eventually realize they're bad and then just suck as the season goes on.

I went to that playoff game—-it was glorious—dominating the HATED Cowpatties—listening to the silence slowly take over the stadium as the fans stated to realize their dynasty with the triplets was ending right in front of their eyes—

And the Cowpatties have never recovered from that beatdown

More reason to take Love, or the best pass rusher at 3. I never would have thought of Nolan, and I wouldn't have traded down the year before. Got bust written all over him and Robinson, but the coaches maybe could reverse their trip to obscurity. I like MLF and his additions. It's coaching thru strength and techniques that'll save their careers, and I am routing for them to defy the odds to get the Cards good again.
