Also, taking Wadsworth meant we didn't fall into the Leaf trap, which would've been even worse.

How awful is our luck, though? In the year of Peyton Manning, the Cards picked #2. This year, they can't get Mendoza picking at #3. Oof.
Did we trade?? Leaf went #2

Yes

Chargers got the #2

Cardinals got: the No. 3 overall pick (used on Andre Wadsworth), a 1998 second-round pick (Corey Chavous), a 1999 first-round pick (David Boston), return specialist Eric Metcalf, and linebacker Patrick Sapp
That's right... thanks for sparking the memory.
I liked Chavous

It was a freaking great trade for the Cards.

Cursed franchise can’t make a dynasty with that haul

yes, in the most Cardinal-esque fashion ever

the Chargers were playing out the season and started Craig Welihan. the Cards took a 13-3 lead into the 4th quarter, but SD had moved the ball all day but threw 4 ints -- all by Kwame Lassiter.

But the D allowed a Welihan 30 yard TD pass with 22 secs left to tie it up.

On 4th and 20, no less.

Didnt we clinch against The Chargers? Its been too long, but my brain says SD.
Yep...we had to beat the Saints the previous week, and then the Chargers to make the playoffs. I went to both games, which was pretty exciting for a 15 year old Cards fan.

Whelihan brings back memories I played basketball against his brother Kent who was really good. Craig was bigger and was good at basketball I remember most people thought football was his second sport. Dude made the NFL after playing at Pacific not exactly a football powerhouse

Same. Back to back walk-off FG games to get us into the playoffs.

I still have a chunk of the grass from the SD game after me, Ouchie and Brother Who Shall Not Post rushed the field.

My buddy did the same, and might still have it. It's a shame that we have such a small number of those moments with this team.

It was actually 1998. The 97 Cardinals went 4-12.
Yep, I remember because I was finishing my term in the Army overseas. I was home for under a month when the playoff game happened. I told my mother I would roll naked in the snow if we beat the Cowgirls, and she started freaking out because I was going to do it--I couldn't piss off the football gods by reneging, amirite? But a guy I served with from Arizona called me from Germany the minute the game ended and we gushed about the game for forever instead.

I also remember a surreal calm when the Bolts scored that touchdown. I said to myself, "We have Metcalf, Plummer, and Jacke. We got this." And we did. Cardiac Cards, baby.

Ahhhhhh.....

Now it makes sense... I knew pottsville couldn't last....it's more recent....
We won a playoff game prayed for...then didn't hold up our end of the deal...

Ladies and gentlemen, we have the origin of the curse!!!

To lift the curse. You're gonna have to post video evidence the terms have been met.

At the next snow then.

yeah, but he was already falling apart so I never counted on him moving forward.

the athleticism/speed that D had up front with Simeon/Wadsworth/Jamir Miller - and then they immediately let Jamir walk in a Dansby-esque moronic move, Wadsworth's knee blew up and Simeon... well, we know the story there.

But those three guys just DOMINATED Dallas in that playoff game. All young, cornerstone studs on D to possibly wreak havoc for years.

and within a matter of years, all three of them were gone for one reason or another.
And that’s forgetting we had mark smith who was a player with the rest of the illustrious name players soaking up blockers.

Yes, Metcalf had a great return, Plummer threw a 15 yard pass, and Jacke barely hooked in the FG from like 53 yards out. Pretty sure we only had like 22 seconds to pull all that off. I was with my wife & kids visiting my family in Syracuse. I just remember doing shots of Wild Turkey with my Dad & brother in laws. My oldest son Justin (CardsFanMD) even snuck in a shot & he was 14 lol.

This was a fantasitic trade for the Cards.

We all knock Rod Graves but this was a beautiful trade.

We were still season ticket holders and living in PHX then. What a great game. We walked out in the field after that game as well.
