Welcome to the Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll presented by IU Health for May 4-9, 2026.

Congratulations to last week's winner, Bloomington South baseball's Xavier Hemingway, who received 43.3% of the vote (12,600) to top Owen Valley baseball's Grady Bough (32.8%).

Readers may vote as much as they like in our latest poll before it closes on Thursday, May 14 at noon. Here are this week's nominees:

Simon Barnes, South boys track​


Junior ran a pair of races that met the three-participant standard in the 100 and 200 last week at the Conference Indiana Meet (10.96/22.14) and came back at the North-South meet, taking third in the 100 (10.97) and second in the 200 (22.40). Helped the 4x100 relay to wins in each event.

Sloane Barrett, South softball​


Senior went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, a double, stolen base and run scored in a 7-4 win over Seymour and an RBI, a sacrifice and a run scored in a 12-2, five-inning win over Linton.

Ally Bland, Edgewood softball​


Played a big role in the Mustangs going 4-1 and sweeping three games at the Edgewood Invitational. Pitched a complete game in a 5-4 loss to Cascade, then went 18 innings, walking just one and striking out 41 in wins over Northview (5-0, one-hitter, 16K), Monrovia (8-2), Bedford North Lawrence (10-4) and West Vigo (11-1, 5 innings). At the plate went 9-for-15, with four doubles and scoring eight runs.

Connor Couch, South baseball​


Senior went 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in a 12-2 win over Southport. He went 1-for-3, scoring the only run in a loss at Franklin.

Macey Crider, Edgewood girls track​


Had a big day in a three-way meet against Owen Valley at Northview, winning the 100 (12.76) the 200 (27.00) and shot put (40-4) and anchored the 4x100 relay to a win in 50.68 as the Mustangs won the meet.

Ryan Decker, North boys golf​


Freshman fired a 75 to place third and lead the Cougars to a 314 and the four-shot win over Washington and Bedford North Lawrence in the Bloomington North Invitational at Cascades.

Boaz Ewer, Seven Oaks boys track​


Freshman ran his best 4x800 split of the season and set personal records in the 1,600 (4:52.02) and the 3,200 (10:42.07) in a meet at Owen Valley.

Noah Hall, Owen Valley boys track​


Senior won high jump with a season best 6-foot-7 and was second in long jump with a 20-1 in a triangular meet against Edgewood and Northview.

Violet Hall, South girls track​


Won the 100 at the North-South meet with a career best 12.40 and took second in the 200 in another PR of 25.40. Second in the long jump in 16-7¼. Anchored the 4x100 relay to a win in 48.75.

William Hosey, Edgewood boys track​


Had a career best race in the 100, winning the event in 10.95 in a meet against Northview and Owen Valley. He's the first Mustang under 11.0 since Zaak Raake in 2022. Also anchored the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to second place. Placed fourth in the long jump.

Wyatt Craig, Eastern Greene baseball​


Went 3-for-7 with an RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases as the T-Birds split a pair of SWIAC games, beating White River Valley 13-3 and falling to league leader Bloomfield, 11-3.

Payton Lukowski, Owen Valley girls track​


Owen Valley's Payton Lukowski broke a 41-year old school record in the 1,600 with her 5:21.82, taking second in the race by a mere .27. She also ran a 2:31.20 in the 800.

Rosie Morrison, Seven Oaks girls track​


Freshman set personal records in the 100, 200, and discus (by 14 feet) in a meet at Owen Valley on Thursday.

Caleb Winders, North boys track​


The senior finally, officially broke the boys school record in the 800 in an epic race against Westview's Noah Bontrager in a showcase event at Fort Wayne, taking second by .009 in 1:47.87. It broke John Hiestand's 1:50.4 from 2004. Won the 800 at the North-South meet in 1:53.72.
