Vikings insider gives perfect explanation of JJ McCarthy and Kyler Murray situation originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Bringing a guy like Kyler Murray in for the Minnesota Vikings isn't by accident. Minnesota obviously wasn't happy with its quarterback play, as J.J. McCarthy was one of the more below-average quarterbacks in the NFL when called upon.
It's a tough situation for Minnesota to be in, but instead of allowing it to continue, the organization went out and landed Murray, who was once viewed as an elite-level quarterback in this league.
What's interesting is that some have made it seem like there's a quarterback competition for the Vikings.
I don't want to say the coaching staff is viewing it as a potential competition, but the reality is they went out and landed a player of Murray's caliber in hopes that he would figure things out and be the star he once was.
So far, there's nothing to suggest things have changed.
“When the team signed Kyler Murray this spring, it was pretty clear at the time that he would be the overwhelming favorite to start the 2026 season unless J.J. McCarthy drastically improved, developed and showed that every day. Through six practices, there has been nothing that I’ve seen that would shift me from that perspective based on covering this team and being out there,” Alec Lewis said, H/T Heavy.
A lot of reports have indicated that McCarthy hasn't looked great in practice, and Murray has. It's still very early on in training camp, and I'd assume that McCarthy is going to get tons of reps over the next month or so before the regular season, but it's a bit disappointing to hear that he hasn't looked that great so far.
Even if Murray was the guy to come in and be the starter, there was always a hope that McCarthy would figure some things out.
