The Minnesota Vikings have continued to maintain that Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy will take part in a true quarterback competition when training camp begins. However, the feeling from most is that Murray was signed early in free agency to be the starter and that he will ultimately win the job.
Not everyone shares that sentiment, though. Adam Schefter told ESPN's Get Up that he doesn't see McCarthy conceding the job to Murray this early.
“I know everybody is anointing Kyler," Schefter said. "I’m not ready to just give up on J.J. McCarthy. That’s me. We’ll see.”
Few, if any, in NFL media are more plugged in than Schefter. For him to say he isn't going to give up on McCarthy says one of two things. Either the Vikings truly believe McCarthy can win the job, or someone behind the scenes is telling Schefter to keep putting out the public facade that McCarthy still stands a chance, even though Murray is destined to win it.
Vikings training camp begins this week, and we may finally get some clarity on the competition. If not, it could continue to drag on until the Ravens come to town for joint practices on Aug. 19 and 20.
