No. 7 UCLA softball fell short against No. 9 Nebraska to lose the finale 8-4 at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. on Sunday. The Big Ten Conference series loss is the first of the season for the Bruins
The Cornhuskers got the better of the Bruins with a blowout in the first game, but UCLA was able to split the series with a win in their second game. This time UCLA's rough second inning cost them the series as the Bruins desperately rotated through three pitchers to stop the six-run, Nebraska onslaught.
UCLA got on the board in the top of the first with a run scored from a hit by a pitch, but Nebraska wouldn't allow the Bruins to create more separation by closing out the the Bruins turn at bat with the bases loaded. The Cornhuskers started off the bottom of the first with a home run to center field to keep the game tied 1-1.
The Bruins had no answers for Nebraska's batters with all three of UCLA's pitchers in the second allowing a home run. UCLA's sophomore Brynne Nally gave up a two-run homer, redshirt junior Sydney Somerndike came in relief and allowed a three-run homer and freshman Natalie Cable stepped on the mound and gave up a home run to end the Cornhuskers five hit, six run inning.
UCLA was behind 7-1 and was unable to get anything going in the third, but cut into the Cornhuskers massive lead with a home run in the fourth.
UCLA's batting struggles continued to persist in the fifth and sixth, but Nebraska was keen on increasing their lead. The Cornhuskers put up their last run of the day in the fifth coming off of three hits to move ahead 8-2.
The Bruins weren't able to dig themselves out of the hole they put themselves in, but they concluded the game with a two-run homer by Rylee Slimp in the top of the seventh to cut Nebraska's lead in half as they fell 8-4.
UCLA will head back home and prepare for their game at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles against Hawaii on Thursday with an anticipated start time of 3 p.m. PT.
