No. 7 UCLA softball opened their series against No. 9 Nebraska with a 4-1 loss at Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. on Friday.
The Cornhuskers snapped the Bruins 22-game win streak with Nebraska's pitching unit giving UCLA's batters fits, while holding them to four hits, a walk and a run with eight strikeouts. Bruins senior pitcher Taylor Tinsley was the only player for the Bruins to step on the mound and gave up four runs off of five hits and seven walks. The veteran pitcher also threw seven strikeouts against 31 batters faced for a 3.04 earned run average.
Both teams were unable to make contact at bat in the first three innings, although the Cornhuskers managed to get five of their batters on base with four walks from Tinsley. The game remained scoreless heading into the fourth.
The Bruins got the first score of the game in the top of the fourth with a single by freshman infielder Bri Alejandre sending senior utility Megan Grant home. Tinsley gave up a single and walked a Nebraska for the fifth time of the day, but UCLA entered the fifth up 1-0.
UCLA couldn't increase their lead as their batter's eyes continued to play tricks on them with two striking out swinging. The Cornhuskers responded quickly in the fifth with a two-run homer putting Nebraska up 2-1.
The game continued to slip away with UCLA's only base runner in the sixth coming from an error and the Cornhuskers scoring two more runs. The last run came off of a walk with the bases loaded.
The game was on the line for UCLA and their win streak was on the cusp of ending as they entered the top of the seventh. The Bruins needed three-runs to keep the game going, but instead none of the batters that stepped up to bat made it to first.
The Bruins have a chance at redemption with their second game of the series coming on Saturday at noon PT.
