Offensive Minded Candidates:

Would make sense if the priority is developing a QBOF and an offense designed around RB David Johnson.

1. Pat Shurmur (MIN OC)---has past HC experience---is arguably the OC of the year, with his clever weekly wrinkles. Could bring UFA QB Case Keenam with him while he grooms a QBOF. Who would his choice for DC be?

2. Todd Haley (PIT OC)---wants another chance to prove himself as a HC and was highly successful as an OC with the Cardinals. Has been highly productive in PIT, but reports of the continued tension between him and Big Ben are troublesome. The Cardinals would want to know what veteran QB Haley would want as his 2018 starter and who his choice for DC would be. Mike Pettine, the former CLE HC, could be hot choice for DC for a number of the offensive minded candidates. Would Haley be amenable to keeping James Bettcher as DC? Typically it is best for a new HC to hire his own staff.

3. Josh McDaniels (NE OC)---currently looks like one of the top candidates for the Giants' HC spot. It looks like this is the year that McDaniels will take a HC job. In Arizona, who would he want as his veteran QB? The Giants' situation with Eli returning for one more year and a chance to draft one of the top QBs would seem a better scenario for McDaniels. If not there, working with Matt Stafford or Mitchell Trubisky in the NFC North would seem attractive.

4. John DeFilippo (PHI QBC)---can he make the leap from QB coach to HC? Would bring a lot of knowledge and energy to the position from an offensive standpoint. He would need a veteran DC to take care of that side of the ball, the way McVay does in LA. Which veteran DC could JDF bring with him?

5. Frank Reich (PHI OC)---was a QB coach in Arizona. MB and SK know him well. Would seem to have the gravitas and attention to detail to be a good HC. Who would be his choice for QB and DC?

6. Pete Carmicheal (NO OC)---has been one of the more unsung coaches with the Saints, but sure knows how to focus an offense around a pair of dynamic RBs.

Defensive Minded Candidates:

Would make sense if the priority is to finish building a dominant defense which the team could lean on while it develops a QBOF.

1. Matt Patricia (NE DC)---talk about attention to detail, Patricia brings an engineer's approach and rare work ethic to coaching---he even got BB and his staff updated on the latest film study technologies. Is a genius at detecting another team's offensive tendencies. Who would his QB and OC be?

2. Steve Wilks (CAR DC)---super aggressive approach to coaching defense---would expect all his players to play hard and physical. Excellent background as DB coach. Who would his QB and OC be?

3. Mike Vrabel (HOU DC)---has only one year of DC experience (with mixed results), but has the charisma and the pedigree to be an excellent HC. Much would depend on the kind of staff he could bring with him.

4. Teryl Austin (DET DC)---this guy could be the diamond in the rough. Like Wilks, his defenses play hard and very physical. Players love him and his style of coaching. Could he bring Jim Bob Cooter with him as OC? Cooter has his QBs make calls at the l.o.s. This approach was effective for Matt Stafford.

Matt Patricia is interesting because of the details he brings. The type of young coach we could use.

Question is who would he bring in for OC as it would have to be a strong hire?

And will he be able to be at the top and handle all the pressure?

That's a great question, BCF. I would be fascinated to know Patricia's plan. I bet he has an ace up his sleeve.

I'm not a fan of any of the defensive candidates. Vrabel would be an awful hire. Patricia would probably be last on my list. Belichick runs the defense and, while Patricia may be technically sound, I would be very hesitant to be the 1st team to give him a HC position.

I do like all the offensive candidates.

Another thing to consider. What type of defense will the new HC prefer. Will the Cards even consider coaches that prefer the 4-3 defense?

Nobody has mentioned Vic fangio being considered for anything. Would be a major upgrade as our DC

John DeFilippo, i'm sure he's ready to try and prove himself as an OC. I'd rather do that than jump him straight to HC. That's a lot of 'youth' in those 2 positions, though.

I'm leaning toward Shurmur and it would be great to see him bring Vic Fangio with him. The Bears went into this season with gaping holes in their defensive backfield and made their defense very respectable.

I agree with this....I have to say, New England's defense doesn't really put fear in me.

If he brings the energy to the interview he shows in coaching, I think it will be John DeFilippo. Keim and Michael are drawn to passion and an emotional connection to the game. They will be looking for a unique character as much as football knowledge which showed in their hire of Arians. I think DeFilippo might have that trait. Anyone who walks into that interview and is not themselves and is hesitant as if reading off a cue card is not going to get the job

About Matt Patricia---no coach would work harder. The guy is smart as a tack and he is a preparation junkie.

Full disclosure...I have never been successful picking a head coach or drafting franchise QB's. I was ecstatic over Buddy Ryan and Dennis Green. I didn't like Whisenhunt (still don't) or Vince Tobin. When Bruce Arians was hired, he was at the bottom of my list and Andy Reid was at the top. I was way wrong on BA and he is now my favorite all time coach.

Not sure what to think about Pat Shurmur. Sounds like he may have gotten a raw deal in Cleveland with the lockout and ownership change but he also was part of drafting Brandon Weeden.

If I remind well, Weeden under Shumur worked quite well. He was better than Tanehill in his first two years if memory serves me right. Than with Shurmur gone ... Weeden colapsed.

Patricia makes most of the calls, Bellicheck doesn't call the D if you watch NE games you would know that Bellicheck this year hasn't had a sheet and called the plays, the D is most of the time on Patricia. And with what Bill gave him, he made a good one out of it.

I don't know if DeFelipo or Reich is the guy you should go for, the one that made that Offense to what it was this year, for shure sould get a closer look.

Bill O Brian would be a guy to look for too. I would say no to the rest.

Else I don't want anyone of the rest expect for Harbaugh or Shawn from College level. But with Harbaugh you would probably look for a 4-5 year deal he didn't last any time longer than that, most by himself.

So 5 guys for 6 spots hopefully we get one of them. I'm already pumped to see who will be our next HC and if CP or Fitz come back another year.
