Offensive Minded Candidates:
Would make sense if the priority is developing a QBOF and an offense designed around RB David Johnson.
1. Pat Shurmur (MIN OC)---has past HC experience---is arguably the OC of the year, with his clever weekly wrinkles. Could bring UFA QB Case Keenam with him while he grooms a QBOF. Who would his choice for DC be?
2. Todd Haley (PIT OC)---wants another chance to prove himself as a HC and was highly successful as an OC with the Cardinals. Has been highly productive in PIT, but reports of the continued tension between him and Big Ben are troublesome. The Cardinals would want to know what veteran QB Haley would want as his 2018 starter and who his choice for DC would be. Mike Pettine, the former CLE HC, could be hot choice for DC for a number of the offensive minded candidates. Would Haley be amenable to keeping James Bettcher as DC? Typically it is best for a new HC to hire his own staff.
3. Josh McDaniels (NE OC)---currently looks like one of the top candidates for the Giants' HC spot. It looks like this is the year that McDaniels will take a HC job. In Arizona, who would he want as his veteran QB? The Giants' situation with Eli returning for one more year and a chance to draft one of the top QBs would seem a better scenario for McDaniels. If not there, working with Matt Stafford or Mitchell Trubisky in the NFC North would seem attractive.
4. John DeFilippo (PHI QBC)---can he make the leap from QB coach to HC? Would bring a lot of knowledge and energy to the position from an offensive standpoint. He would need a veteran DC to take care of that side of the ball, the way McVay does in LA. Which veteran DC could JDF bring with him?
5. Frank Reich (PHI OC)---was a QB coach in Arizona. MB and SK know him well. Would seem to have the gravitas and attention to detail to be a good HC. Who would be his choice for QB and DC?
6. Pete Carmicheal (NO OC)---has been one of the more unsung coaches with the Saints, but sure knows how to focus an offense around a pair of dynamic RBs.
Defensive Minded Candidates:
Would make sense if the priority is to finish building a dominant defense which the team could lean on while it develops a QBOF.
1. Matt Patricia (NE DC)---talk about attention to detail, Patricia brings an engineer's approach and rare work ethic to coaching---he even got BB and his staff updated on the latest film study technologies. Is a genius at detecting another team's offensive tendencies. Who would his QB and OC be?
2. Steve Wilks (CAR DC)---super aggressive approach to coaching defense---would expect all his players to play hard and physical. Excellent background as DB coach. Who would his QB and OC be?
3. Mike Vrabel (HOU DC)---has only one year of DC experience (with mixed results), but has the charisma and the pedigree to be an excellent HC. Much would depend on the kind of staff he could bring with him.
4. Teryl Austin (DET DC)---this guy could be the diamond in the rough. Like Wilks, his defenses play hard and very physical. Players love him and his style of coaching. Could he bring Jim Bob Cooter with him as OC? Cooter has his QBs make calls at the l.o.s. This approach was effective for Matt Stafford.
