The North Carolina Tar Heels received some bad news regarding their coaching search on Friday afternoon, as one candidate is officially off the board. And it happens to be their top guy.
During a press conference on Friday, Tommy Lloyd announced he has signed an extension with Arizona and is withdrawing from the UNC job. Lloyd will now stay in Tucson as he has the Wildcats in the Final Four for the first time in 25 years.
With hopes that Lloyd would eventually land in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels made their push. Per Matt Norlander, the Tar Heels made Lloyd an offer that would make him as one of the top-two-paid head coaches. Lloyd took less to stay at Arizona, but the deal breaker? He doesn't have to report to the Athletic Director anymore.
Lloyd did praise UNC and knows how much of an honor it is to even be considered for the job.
"North Carolina is an amazing place. It's a one-of-one," Lloyd said. "It's an honor to even be considered for that job."
He also denied any report that Michael Jordan called him.
For North Carolina, it will be interesting to see where they go to next. Dusty May is also rumored to be on the Tar Heels list as is Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan.
